Sustenance hunter designation

Recently renewed my firearms license with the appropriate box checked for sustenance and my renewal has been completed

The May 2020 oic provided for an exemption for sustenance hunters to continue using their firearms until a suitable replacement could be purchased. The government has not provided a buy back program enabling the purchase of a replacement yet.

No documentation came with my renewal stating the sustenance designation which is a concern given I may be stopped out in the bush and asked to provide documentation of my sustenance exemption.

What paperwork do you carry with you as proof?

I guess your hunting license and tags should be all you need.
That would seem like a foolproof alibi,to me.
 
You have a reasonable concern, sorry I have no solution to offer. The lack of paperwork is one of the ways it seems our government is pushing their agenda to "define, discourage, and disarm" - you're at the discourage stage.
 
True sustenance hunters are exempt from the fee for a PAL. There must be some kind of paperwork to fill out for this other than a checkbox on a form. From the website:

Q: I hunt to provide sustenance for my family. Do I need to get a
licence?
A: Yes, you must get a firearms licence; however, sustenance hunters will not
have to pay the licence fee for long guns. To find out if you qualify as a
sustenance hunter, you should contact the office of the Chief Firearms
Officer (CFO) of your province or territory. For the number,
call 1-800-731-4000.

With regards to the term "another suitable firearm".... That sounds very arbitrary? Who exactly determines what is suitable for who and what type of hunting? Is there a list that we can reference? Seems to me there would be all kinds of reasons why one firearm would not be "suitable" for one reason or another? A simple example would be that although someone commonly uses one specific rifle for hunting, they have many others but "that" one is the only one "they" deem as suitable for said purpose out of the bunch.

.... So who says what's suitable and what's not?

There has been no buy back of the prohibited rifles enabling someone to even purchase a "suitable" replacement.

This would not be a discussion if the prohibited firearms had been purchased by the government enabling the purchase of a suitable replacement

people who do not want to face criminal charges for exercising their right stated in the amnesty.

Sure I would likely win after waiting years for a court date with no firearms license, but that is what is called punishment by process to which I have been victim of before.

Ian Runkle had a video on this subject - yes the text of the OIC is vague, the cop may decide and charge accordingly, then the judge will decide. If there's any question about you having another suitable firearm - don't do it. This will only really work for a sustenance hunter who owns one (or very few) gun and can't afford another.

Curiously, What rifle are you wanting to use for hunting?
I thought a sustenance hunter did not need to buy a hunting license or follow set hunting season dates?
I also understood that to be a sustenance hunter you would also have a treaty card which should cover your butt in an instance like that? I do not personally know of any non-native people who are legally sustenance hunters.

^^This how I interpret the amnesty.

"The amnesty period allows for the continued use of previously non-restricted firearms in limited circumstances (e.g., by Indigenous persons exercising Aboriginal or treaty rights to hunt and by those who hunt or trap to sustain themselves or their families), until the end of the amnesty period or when a new firearm is legally obtained. At the end of the amnesty period, all firearms owners must comply with the law."

"An amnesty period is currently in effect and will expire on October 30, 2023."
Amnesty, including indigenous use of affected firearms ends shortly anyway, unless there's another extension?

Sustenance is different that those with treaty rights or living a subsistence lifestyle, the words have different meaning
 
I suspect the Gov't would have a look and see what your financial situation is. Pretty hard to claim you 'have to' sustenance hunt if you a rocking a 3-4000 prohib.
Just speculation on my side, but a likely turn of events I would guess.
