Sustenance Hunting in AB

Do you as a regular hunter, despite having ONE tag, take more???

WHY would you ASSUME a sustenance hunter is LESS ethical than YOU are???? They get a TAG. Or a couple of TAGS. It's still a TAG system! If they take more than they have TAGS for, THEY'RE POACHING! Keeryst, what is going through your head when you make these SERIOUSLY absurd statements???

"free cull tags" are EXACTLY what the sustenance hunting program is about! They're just making an effort to give those who are in a bit more NEED than the average person, a chance at one of those tags first.

If people are shooting like you described for Saskatchewan, they're NOT sustenance hunters. THEY'RE POACHERS. It's ILLEGAL to let meat sit & rot here when you hunt. If you do, you're fined & lose hunting privileges. If you hunt MORE than you have tags for, YOU LOSE it.

HINT, if people are shooting for the sake of shooting, they're NOT sustenance hunting... It's being an unethical SOB that deserves a boot in the butt, NOT a murderfest of forest creatures... WHY is it you refuse to see there's a difference, between people who are CLEARLY abusing a system that was set up to be abused, and a system which is HIGHLY regulated, which requires TAGS and is restricted by where you hunt, what you hunt & indeed, WHEN you hunt (aka proper hours, no sundays)... WHY don't you acknowledge the DIFFERENCES that CLOSE those gaps???

What is BS, is that you're essentially INSISTING that sustenance hunters are NOT qualified hunters, DON'T hunt in proscribed ways, are as unethical as a psychopath and kill everything in sight, when NONE of those elements is in evidence... THAT'S what is BS.

Please... CALL the fish & wildlife office. ASK for yourself, LIKE I DID. And for goodness sake, STOP the insults! *I* am one of those people who MAY qualify, for my medical & financial situation. Yet I'm ethical, hunt only those animals I have tags for and ONLY kill those animals I either will eat (Deer, moose, rabbit) or which pose a threat or hazard (gophers for the holes they dig & which injure farm animals, coyotes when ASKED to, by local farmers and the like). AKA I ethically & responsibly hunt. Yet should I get a sustenance license, you ASSUME I would "go nuts" in the woods? Or someone LIKE me would? THAT is a flame & damn insulting.

If you think "sustanance hunters" will take one deer you are sadly mistaken. Rather than start this ridiculous programs the governmnet could simply give out free cull tags for the regular season or possibly extend a season. They do this in Sask. and it seems to work well. I do not know what the particular details of this program will end up being but sustenance hunting is certainly not just about giving a guy a free tag. There are many in Sask now that can "sustenance hunt " in our province and there have been many many abuses of it. I saw six deer in a pile left by so called sustenance hunters that were left to rot. Another aquantance had three deer shot and left to rot in his field because he refused permision to sustenance hunters.

Controlled numbers of free tags may be the answer but certainly not sustenance hunter designation. It may be simply a legal issue but the future implications can be huge. I will shut up for good now about this but my mind is made up. Sustenance hunting designation is pure BS.

Inspected meat is questionable anyway... I saw a W5 special, where passed meat was shown with HUGE tumors, skin cancer & was half rotten. Cows that were "downer cows" (those that fall & don't get up, hinting at BSE & other conditions) were PASSED simply because they were fat enough to look remotely edible.

I trust my own training & experience, MORE than I do the gov't inspectors...

The secret santa list... BRILLIANT idea! My recommendation is to use the ones already in place... ;-)

www.freecycle.org is a start, but you can't give meat on them, BUT the average freecycle list, also has a sister "Cafe" list, for freecyclers to get together & chat, buy & sell stuff and give away food, ask for it and many other such issues, are dealt with directly. It's a great way to pass on your previous year's meat, simply by offering for free, a grocery bag of venison to someone who needs it.

Of course, it's dead easy to set up a local e-group for both cafe & freecycle... It's also dead easy to set one up titled "Hunters for the Hungry: <insert locality here>"

L

There are challenges with any un-inspected meat. It creates a huge 'health authority' issue.

I think there should be a program like that - but sadly not. You can give the meat directly to someone but not to an organization for distribution.

Y'know - we should really do something about that. Maybe a way 'around' the law is to set up a group like a 'secret santa' kind of thing - where people willing to donate meat are put on a list and people needing meat are put on a list and we just put them together. Hunters for the Hungry or something. <snip>

Sustenance drinking... what is that, like, rum and boost liquid breakfast?

Rum and Carnation instant breakfast comes to mind.:p

For lunch, rum and slimfast. That's a low calorie sustenance which would make me a more fit hunter.

And for supper a rum diet coke press which would just be a sipper as I wash down the teriyaki marinated moose steak.

You're welcome too Foxer. Only a two day drive for you:D

Everyone is welcome (except for Riden who is an arse for posting this and making us all argue and because he only drinks rye).

Hmm perhaps a small highjack?

Now back to sustenance huntiing and free tags.

Of course its possible!

It's also still trespassing. If you feel that way about trespassing Yobs, I am sure that the local landowners would very much appreciate your spending all your free time out there watching over THEIR land for them. Free security service. Who can argue with that.
I don't suppose any effort you put in would stop the neighbor from letting his brother-in-law come out and whack the big buck that has been running back and forth across his land, though, do you?

I have met a few guys hunting on land that I had permission to be on, that I knew were not so blessed. They were informed. They departed. <shrug> Happens.

It never caused me any worry that they might take a deer that I wanted, because a) there are other deer, and b) they are not my deer, until I catch them!

I'm not your buddy! :D

My buddy's are all pretty open about where they are hunting, and don't mind sharing!
They understand that the only way to prevent someone else shooting a trophy in their area, is to get it first, fair and square.

They all understand that they do not own any of the deer.

And they understand that sometimes, life just isn't fair. But they don't pout about it.

And they don't do much :runaway: over stuff that may or may not affect them.

Face it. We might get to know each other, and actually become friends, but I think we are of different minds about some of the fundamental reasons I go hunting, so, maybe not.
I enjoy taking people out and hooking them up with a deer, if I can. I am not chintzy about sharing what I do know. Even if I don't know much. If another guy asks me what I have seen, and where, I tell him. He may well be the guy that puts ME onto something good!

You should buy that 50 acres. At least then, you will be worrying over something that is yours.

Cheers

You Sir, are one I could hunt with.

If anyone has details of BC sustenance please pm me.

It is briefly mentioned in the bc regs, which you can view online and search the synopsis of here:

http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/wildlife/hunting/regulations/0708/docs/Hunting-TrappingSynopsis_0708.pdf

But the best route is to contact the ministry and find out what the deal is. We do NOT have a sustenance program similar to what alberta is proposing, but hey - if you point that out they might well look at altering the rules.

thanx Foxer.. I tried checking a few regs but it seems only for natives.SO FAR. I,ll call the ministry after the holiday

You enjoy lots of walking, and don't mind the flavor of tinned beans, then?

:D

Thanks for the compliment.

Hope you had a great Christmas, and I hope all have a new year as good or better than that last!

Cheers

I do not particularly enjoy either, however I do enjoy conversing with those who can think for themselves but who do not make a habit of thinking only of themselves.

Frankly, I think you were very charitable Foxer.

I am no bleeding heart, but it is Christmas too. Not every poor person is a bum. Some have been dealt a bad hand, and not everyone can overcome it.

I have a neighbor with literacy isues of his own, who has 2 Down's syndrome kids and everyone of his kids (6??) wears glasses. Bottom line, he will never make good coin and will have to work damn hard for everything he has, and he is willing to do that. He does very well by his kids, considering what he has. He drives by my house every morning going to work and sees the same wildlife I do.

I know the guy did not fill his bull tag this fall. Wolves made bulls nervous in this area during the rut this year, lots didn't fill a tag. Something wrong with the world when it is poaching for a guy like this to knock down a cow for his freezer.
True words.
