Obviously you have no idea what the term "fudd" means. We are simply encouraging that he not ruin the value of this firearm, both monetary and hostorical. Bubba'ing a milsurp is not a good thing. If you must, go play with a norinco SKS in your basement and do all the stupid s**t to it you want. If you have seen some of the heartbreaking bubba jobs that many of us have, then you will realize why we dicourage it.
If I "must" I'll do whatever the heck I want with whatever I decide to buy. I think SVT-40's are sweet just the way they are (actually if I had one I'd build a different stock for it and put the old stock away on a shelf), but you folks need to realize that most people in this world could give a rats ass about some old gun. And if the guy wants to actually shoot it, or even better, hunt with it...coating the metal with something more durable than factory blueing is a darn good idea. You need to realize that "collectors" can only buy so many of an item that really doesn't have collectors status. There are loads of these things, how many thousands of original condition safe queens do we really need? Keep your safe queen and let the rest of us have our fun. Then when there are hardly any left, we can continue not caring because we had our fun and you can sit there and fondle your now collectible collectors item. Mmmkay?
