Basswood seems like a bit of underkill. It is soft and easy to carve, but will it hold up to recoil? The originals are laminated birch.

How did you close off the sides of the receiver? Sheet metal? And, how is the butt attached? The SVT40 has a recoil lug under the receiver ring to take most of the force. The latch on the back end is really just to hold things together.

Also how does it shoot? I've been thinking of getting one and putting a POSP scope of some kind on it but a setup like this really would complete the look.
 
Yes the center piece is mostly sheet metal, with some re enforcements inside it. I shot it today for the first time, and everything held up fine, as for the recoil spring on the trigger pad, It doesn't have one, the fit is accurate enough that there is no slack. I bought a posp 3x9 scope for it, so mounting that will be the next project
