SVT 40 - fair market value?

Wow,
I bought 6 of these when they were reasonably priced. 2 of each type with the "expensive" one being a true sniper. I just loved the looks of them, the features were really well ahead of their time and they were affordable. They also tend to be fun to shoot.

I have no plans of selling them though. It's the one surplus rifle I've bought a bunch of just because I liked them. Not as any type of investment.

Really cool rifles. I greatly prefer them to the SKS I have.

I recently sold mine for $600 with an extra mag. I hadn't shot it in years and wasn't in love with it anymore. It came from a long gone dealer in Saskatchewan who's name we do not speak;)

Anyone have thoughts on where the market for these is going? Is the tap turned off for good, or are there any other big sources out there that could become available? Have we hit peak SVT-40?

I slept hard on getting my PAL.. just got it now (after having done the CFSC course a year ago) and the SVT-40 was #1 on my wish-list but they seem way less available now than even two years ago when I was first window-shopping. I've got a bit of a mental block about popping on one now that the price has gone up so much so quickly.. but who knows, maybe they are the next Garand and what they are going for now is still a good deal.

Surplus Arms are popular right now, Supply is likely to remain low (aftermarket only) for the foreseeable future. This would suggest a similar continued market rise in price. Surely there are more SVT's available someplace but with embargo's and trade issues as they are it is unlikely we will see a new supply anytime soon.

Current Min price ~500
tula-~600
Izzy~650
Podolsk-700+
Collectors++
*I did see one listed for $225 last week but wasn't successful in buying it (replied to ad within 5 mins and all info in 10min and I was too late apparently), not sure if it was a joke or motivated seller.

Still if you don't have one at ~600 given the quality of the gun your getting its almost fair in the current market compared to say what you'd pay for say a M305

What embargo Phil? Embargo you have in mind have nothing to do with exports from Ukraine. The reasons we have no new supply are different, but they don't change the most important thing - no new supply so far....

My worry is that there might not be another big source out there. When you look at the production numbers, there really weren't that many made. I feel like it is (or was) a matter of time before the days of these things being widely available are gone.

To clarify what I was referring to was the US restriction on Russian arms imports, as its closest neighbor we are a small market and importing arms in Canadian volumes likely hasn't hit cost effectiveness to import more to Canada (wherever they exist)

My SVT was my deer hunting rifle of choice for a number of years. There wasn't a big selection of hunting rounds and unfortunately I'm not into reloading so I had to take what I could find. She was always reliable in all conditions and digested every type of ammo put into the mag and this caliber had tremendous knock down power. I think it's time to put her into semi retirement. I'd buy another SVT in a heartbeat.

Yup. I have 4 of these that I bought when they were reasonable. None have stock repairs and they are worth more than an example thats all patched up.
I would think $100+ more

From the ones I've seen for sale I can't really see any difference in price. I think people might prefer one with no stock repairs but the ones with them are selling for just as much. I know a lot of them have repairs and maybe because there is more demand than supply right now that these are all selling at a higher price. Before when there was a lot of them you could afford to be a little more picky. Now people just want one while they are still "cheap"ish because it seems prices are going up

Russian refurb stock repairs are generally very well done this is purely a cosmetic issue. For those that like it lipstick on the pig does net a premium to the discerning buyer.

Like all prices in the Canadian market these rifles have hung in place for the last few months with even a very slight price drop i'd say. Still I see these rifles staying on the upswing.

In my opinion, prospective buyers should be more concerned about bore condition. SVT 40's with truly excellent bores may be the rarest of all, irrespective of the manufacturer of the barreled action. The couple of dozen I've had the opportunity to examine closely had bore condition all over the page. I don't know if barrels were ever changed in these late refurb programs but my guess would be that they were not. Some of the poorest I've seen were on original sniper versions.

Wholeheartedly agree. I've bought a number of them. The only things I'm concerned with is bore condition and that of the piston and cup in the gas system.
