I have an SVT 40 that was suffering from FTE. I disassembled and cleaned the entire rifle to make sure there was no debris affecting the extractor. A little further research showed there was an adjustable gas port. I played around with the settings making sure each was lined up correctly and it only ejects on the 1.7 setting. That is the highest setting. I was wondering how normal this is?

Dave. Thats not normal at all. Even on low settings the empty case should partially eject with S&B loads, they are hotter than surplus loads. When I use 185gr S&B for hunting, I have my gas port on the second lowest setting.

I'm thinking that you either have a blockage going into the gas port from the barrel, or you have some extra resistance in the action. Its not unusual to use a 2x4 or a rubber mallet open the bolt to eject a case when the gas port is set too low, but you should have some partial ejections between the lowest and highest settings.

Exactly what I am thinking. I had a partial ejection at 1.5. Any ideas on how to clean the gas port without damaging it? The bore is dark. I know why it is (Not my doing) but it suffered from FTE when the bore was good. There is not much for lube on the rifle right now. How much lube should be on the rails of the receiver? I had to use a lot of lube on the op rods on my Garand's. Is this an issue with the SVT 40 too?

Dissasemble your gas system and clean the littles holes in the gas regulator, you can use a needle and some carb cleaner. Also check the gas port in the barrel but my guess is that your gas regulator is clogged. As for lube, usually, the Tokarev dont need much, fews drop on receiver rail and on the mating surfaces of the bolt and bolt carrier. I shoot mines pretty much dry,no lube particulary in cold weather(like most semi-auto rifle).

Loose gas nozzle "mine was loose and caused the same issue"

Just tighten it back up, so the gas will not escape through the threads. But not to tight, that it locks up the gas adjustment nut.

Look to the gas port first, Dave. If its clean , unclogged and tight, then try taking the springs out of the receiver just to see how smooth it cycles by hand. The fact that it is able to operate a full cycle on the largest port tells me that everything works. Something is partially blocked, plugged or is creating extra friction to impair proper cycles at lower pressure.

Evening guys. I cleaned the regulator and gas port with carb cleaner. Now it's extracting reliably at 1.5. I had a partial extraction at 1.3. So there is a noticeable improvement. At 1.3 I noticed the brass was still cool to the touch and extracted easily by hand. No whackin' the bolt handle with a 2x4. The extracted brass on 1.5 however was too hot to pick up initially. I did lube the rails with oil but in the next session will try dry graphite. From my reading it sounds like 1.3 is the ideal setting for everyday use. Any thoughts fellahs?

DO NOT use dry graphite "its crap" Use gun oil

1.5 is good. Of the 3 svt i have, the 1 i use run at 1.5 all year long, hot summer and very cold winter without problems. Another thing to keep in mind is that variation exist between svt 40, some will run perfect at 1.3 and some will require 1.5 or even 1.7 in somes situations but usually,1.5 should be the highest setting ever needed.

Thanks guys. Appreciate all the input. Made this project all the more fun. Now I have to get my reloading geared up for this rifle. Have a good one Dave
