I finally got some good weather and got a chance to take the SVT-40 to the range. I was using the original iron sights with the rear one set at 100 yards.
I'm very impressed with the accuracy of this rifle right out of the box. I used to be a great shot, but I wear reading glasses now. This makes the rear sight blurry to me. These are 4 round groups because I pulled the first shot on both groups.
I fired 60 shots with the gas regulator set at 1.5. and had 2 empty casings get caught by the bolt carrier. Easy to clear. The recoil is mild with no noticeable muzzle jump like my SKS's. Ammo was MFS non corrosive FMJ 185gr.
I'm really happy with the results and will experiment with lower gas settings next time out. edit: The gas setting was at 1.3

Not bad, i fired mine at 100 yds with chinese ball 147gr and showed very good accuracy. I agree that with glasses, the svt sight are not the best(at least for me) , i wait my repro mount to scope my newly acquired Tokarev, i will see how accurate can be, keeping in mind that the sniper scope mount may not be the best setup. Still in sniper configuration, the tokarev was quit effective in good hands, except at long range where the Mosin performed beautifully.

Thanks. I'll go from there with better ammo next time.
I was pausing between each shot to look through the spotting scope, and I'm sure it was changing my poa.

I fired mine with 147 gr Soviet surplus ball on 1.2 and to my surprise it cycled perfectly :S
I was surprised as everything I read prior to stated that it would probably require 1.3 AT LEAST.
I find it likes the lighter ammo over the heavier commercial stuff.
I managed an 8-9 inch grouping of 5 shots at 100 meters with open sights taking my time.
I love this rifle.
One of my favorites :D

I fired mine last winter with chinese ball 147gr at -30c,the system required to be at 1.5 for full reliability. Maybe the chinese ammo are not powerful as the russian stuff and ofc temperature must be a factor too.

I'm off to the range this morning for some more tests. I'm bringing tools and am going to see how low I can get the gas setting down to with russian MFS 185g. I didn't have a chance to get some different ammo. I'm going to shoot the same distances with my Chiny SKS just for fun. I'll post some results later today

I do love my svt40. A bit long for hunting but if not in the thick bush still good to carry.. Its quite light.
Mine with czech silvertip. Consistant 3-4 inch 100 yard groups. And one of the most accurate off hand rifles I have shot. Just feels so right with its weighting.

Just shot my SVT40 2 weeks ago, with excellent results. It's starting to be one of my favourite shooters. Regular Mil surp ammo. It's a lot more accurate then I first realized, and gets a lot of attention on the range.

Gas setting 1.3 100 Yards. Yugo ammo silver tip. No malfunctions, positive ejection to the front right and some to the rear.
This was the best group, and I hightly doubt I'd be able to duplicate it again.

Nice shooting Dutchie. I didn't have results like that yeterday. I did get the rilfle to cycle lower than 1.3 but it was inconsistent, so I put it back to 1.3 and had no more problems. My problem was the weather. It started to pour rain and my 100 yard targets actually got washed off the target boards. The ones that did stay on, turned to mush when I tried to take them down. I only managed to salvage one of my 200 yard sks targets. I spent most of the day fiddling with the rear sights for elevation.
My sks groups were actually better than my svt ones.

Not bad for a scoped SVT

I found interesting info on www.talks,guns.ru about the SVT. Needed google traduction but very interesting forum. This is a group fired at 100m from a SVT with a repro mount and a original scope, ammo is light ball 147gr if i remember, seems not too bad considering that everybody say that puting a scope, using repro or originals parts is not worth because the SVT has poor accuracy..... Seems to work pretty well for somes:)

MFS 203 gr SP ammo

Hi... Has anyone tried the MFS 203 gr SP ammo in their SVT-40?.. My dealer just brought some in along with the MFS 185 gr FMJ ammo.

I've been told heavy Ball 185 gr ammo will eventually beat the rifle up , stick with the 147 gr ... What do you fella's think?..

Thanks
Bob
