I just picked up a sweet 1940 SVT-40,Can someone tell me what gas setting it should be at for surplus rds?Its like a SKS on steroids...lol
I cant wait to take it out.:pirate:

Oh yes, same thing here, just got mine a few days ago, 1943, lol, sks on steroids, mine came on setting 3, will be trying that first, see what happens. Enjoy!

The gas setting depends on the rounds, what conditions you shoot in, and how clean the rifle is. Its a good idea to purchase the gas tool, and bring a big rubber mallet or 2x4 to the range with you the first time you take the rifle out. Once you have the gas adjusted to your ammo, its not likely to require any changes unless you change ammunition.

i want to buy a svt 40 as well but read somewhere it doesnt shoot hunting rounds very well, has anyone here tried sp hunitng ammo and if so how did it work?

Russian surplus mine ran on the 3 setting but the Chinese it doesn't eject the casing all the way so I put it to 5. The case was stuck out of the chamber about 1/2 inch. I couldn't pull the bolt back with my hand so I used a live round through the hole in the bolt handle to grab like you would a cork screw between your ring and middle finger and pulled the bolt back with ease lol
Btw that is why there is a hole in the bolt handle Them russkies ain't dumb.

Ive tried 180sp in mine svt 40 and it didn't cycle the action at all. I didn't have a gas adjustment tool at the time, iam sure it would of ran fine if i would of tuned it up a bit. It runs 147 grain surplus like a champ on 1.3:)

+1 on the conditions, it will behave differently in different temps with different ammo [there are 3 different surplus I can get around here]

Start low and work up, bring the mallet anyway but you can just drop a spent case in that hole in the bolt carrier and it will give you enough leverage to extract a steel case [actual brass won't give you much of a problem at all]

BTW - mine shoots pretty good at 1.3 in all weather and most rounds, with my handloads being a little lethargic = popping out of the action about a foot straight up and falling onto my bench :)

BBTW - here is the difference between surplus and hand loads in an SVT:

I've been hunting the past 2 seasons with MFS 203gr SP. I pull the trigger, the bullet flies :D . Seriously though, the MFS stuff I've been using works great. A tad dirty mind you, but nothing like surplus rounds, so that's fine.
