I want to buy another rifle, but I can't decide which one.
I found a svt 40 for $800 in good condition, which can be hard to find and will only get harder. I'm also fascinated by the type 81, where I imagine the price might go up. Or a csa vz58. I want all three but can only get one presently.
I appreciate any advice

I like the SVT40 it's my favorite. I'd get that one first, but be selective and get yourself a nice one. After that you can get yourself the others in due time.

I saw them online, but they seem honest about the conditions. There are a number with worn bores and scratches. They look so pretty

Take a look on the EE, SVT's can still be had for around $550. Type 81's will more than likely go up as they become more well known and the "bugs" get worked out, I'd like to say the VZ's would stabilize and stay the same, but who knows, the firearms market in Canada is like flavour of the week at an ice cream shop, things change rapidly here.

If nothing else when you're buying, live by the motto of "get while the gettings good", the same can be said about women. Lol

I agree with the consensus so far which is go with the SVT. I own and have owned a number of firearms and it's by far my favorite. I think $800 might be a little steep for it though (unless it's mint and still in cosmo), so I'd definitely check EE and look at local classifieds if they exist before committing to $800. Additionally I just think the SVT looks damn ###y, and having a full caliber semi auto for that price is hard to beat.
While alot of people complain about the accuracy of the SVT, I've personally never had a problem with mine, and the bore is certainly well worn. As I mentioned in a previous thread I've got 3000+ rounds through mine myself and while I've noticed a slight decrease in accuracy, it's still in my acceptable limits for moose hunting. But as will all internet advise, your mileage may vary.
Pick which one you like the best, buy lots of ammo, and do lots of shooting. Then when money allows it, buy one of the others!

SVT for sure, but it took me 3 to find one that wasnt a total POS.

Make sure if you buy one that you give it a good once over.

first u have to figure out primary reasons WHY u r buying a new toy...

long term investment/ cost at present time-SVT
versatility and compromise-T81
joy and reliability-VZ58

Original CZ858, not the VZ58 variety in this country.

Give the 81 some mileage with other people first, meaning wait and see.

If going SVT, like Dilli implies, expect to go through some faulty pieces before you find a gem.

I doubt I'll be able to find a svt 40 locally so that I can handle it first. Ordering online if there are lots of crappy ones seems very risky....

SVT 40 no question
Depends what ammo you have or can source. Overall the CZ or T81 will be easier to feed. Like other said plan that you may need to visually inspect or order/sell/trade some till you get a good one. I have bought 7 Svt40's total and have kept 4 of them. 2 sold as decent rifles just additional tulas and another that rattled in the stock/mag/front etc worse than the red army. If I could choose I'd want all my Svt40's in AVT stocks.

I shot a CZ58 a few weeks ago. Honestly I was not that impressed, it had been tacticooled and was not much different than shooting an SKS with a bipod mount instead of bayonet. I won't be upgrading to either as they do nothing my SKS's and CZ527 bolt action can't do equal or better.

I'm partial to the SVT 40 but a certain proportion do seem to have unresolvable accuracy issues. A certain proportion are great- this photo shows a 5 shot group using run of the mill older Chinese surplus. 100m with pouring rain. This is a refurb '41 Tula with simplified receiver (no scope mount side rails) and a so-so appearing bore. Shot several groups to get it zeroed (most don't appear to be zeroed at refurb) and they were all like this. Shows you the rifles potential if you get a good one. As to what makes this one "good", it does have a much snugger barreled action to stock fit than most of the refurbs I've owned. Eyeballing the bore prior to the range trip I wasn't expecting anything good. With regard to buying one, you might try to find a seller who will share targets he's shot with his SVT.

SVT is a good option, though you have to be prepared to enjoy the journey to find a good one. And not always the first one you picked off the shelf, if you hit a gem and a deal on your first one, bonus.

They got some more, say their very good condition. Are they trustworthy?

I think they price on the high side. I don’t think an svt is worth $800....yet.
You’ve kinda missed the boat a bit on plentiful and cheap SVT-40s by a couple of years.
At the $350-400 mark and under they were really good value.
If you can find a good one for under $600 now you will have done pretty good.
