SVT-40 sniper list

The more I read this thread the more I want to get one....and I said to myself only one rifle. Is SVT-40 with original scope (sniper) hard to find? I only see Mosin with scope around.
They are more scarce than Mosin scopes, but it is real to find them
Originally SVT scopes were produced by FED factory in 1940-1942 (all scopes), and by Progress factory in 1940-1942 (1942 scopes with serial number without letter prefix, 1942 scopes with letter prefix were already produced for Mosin rifles). All other scopes, even if the they have SVT tube, were produced for Mosin snipers.
Here is a link with PU scopes collage from my collection. All possible variations are displayed.
First 7 scopes are SVT scopes.

Correct SVT scope must have :

How can you tell where the scope was made? I have a 1940 dated SVT40 scope coming which was supposed to be made at the Progress plant in Lenningrad (St. Petersberg) in plant 357. No CB markings on elevation dial for use with Mosin 91/30. Refurb markings from 1968.

Just purchased an SVT-40 from Wolverine.
Want it for a shooter.

Wealth of information has been provided by this thread.

Thank you.

Ok, now I see what you posted! Very nice!!! Great info. I also found your post over on gunboards along with sturmgrenadier's post. I had no idea there was such a huge variety of scope manufacturer's for the SVT40 PU scope!

Thanks for all of this info.

Ian

I just purchased this refurb from my local Canadian Tire.

Hope this helps with your research. Just ask if you need any other info or photos.

Tula 1941 SVT40 with rail and sniper notch. Sitting in an AVT40 stock. Refurbed.

(Sorry about the grease. I cleaned it up after I took the pics.)

Ratnik.

I took some new pics with shots of the serial included. I used a grease pencil to highlight the markings. Hope these help. Serial # is IK900

Cheers!

Sounds about right, though I'd say $4-500 on an advertised notched receiver. Thing is, we're mixing original Tula factory snipers, field conversions on any possible receiver, and current Bubba and deliberate hump jobs (it is, after all, just a file and bluing cream away). Depending on a solid identification as a good condition original with the proper configuration of features, could be a bit more.

The annoying part is that there's people out there who have a good notched SVT and either don't notice it, or know but don't want to spend what's really a ridiculous amount relative to the rifle for reproduction mounts and optics. That leaves people who *have* or are definitely willing to spend to scope and shoot it scrounging around and not finding anything. You can call all the stores when an import comes in and tell them you're willing to pay more for one, but they all say they don't have any, because the owners and staff pick them out for personal hoards!

How often do you see them for sale? If I'm willing to pay full price do you think it'd be easy for me to find one?

PS Militaria has several on their site for about a year. I had a friend find two at Canadian tire last week. I found one last summer at P&D. The last two I have seen where listed on Frontier Firearms, one listed just last week for $400 and I don't know if it still for sale or not?

I have been looking as well for any notched SVT40 and could not find any. However there are a many regular SVT40s.

P&S Militaria does not have any SVTs with sniper receivers on their site, and I haven't seen any listed as such there in the past year. Your other sources I cannot dispute.

Are you confusing *scope rails* with the notch on top of the hump behind the bolt, which permits a cross pin to hold the scope mount in place under recoil? The rails are required to use the original or repro. mount, and yes you can get away without the notch, but rifles used by marksmen during the War were railed and either issued with a notch, or had one filed in the field.

Thank you for answering my question before even asking it. I was wondering if all SVT-40 have rails on them and most of the pictures I have seen have it but some don't.

DesertFox is very lucky to find one at crappy tire of all places :) Good find!
