SVTs

The last dealer with them in stock sold out. No one expects anymore of these to come in the country. The prices are only going up from here

Yup, the "buy low, sell high" crowd is locking in their profits. Not a bad move. Right now, the prices are high. While they could go higher, you never know what the future holds. Someone could come across a warehouse full of them in Romania or Albania or wherever. They could get banned (you never know with Libs in power).

Mine is staying in my permanent collection.

Not sure if this is a great time to buy or not. Supplies are definitely drying up, so the prices should continue to climb. But again, you never know.

I've heard a few people compare these to the M1 Garands and predict that the prices will continue to rise like they did. I've contacted most of the dealers in Canada who have sold these in the past and all of them have said they haven't seen any of these come into the country in a couple years now and there's no leads to anymore coming in.

No one knows what the future holds though. Maybe a warehouse full of them does get imported.....

I would agree with that, in the long term. Look at the prices of SVT's south of the border - fixer-uppers go for $1500 USD. Supply relative to demand is higher in Canada (more SVT's relative to the number of collectors), but that will shake out in the long run. A high percentage of the original buyers got them because they were cheap at the time, and promptly shot the piss out of them and generally abused them - basically treated them like a high powered SKS. Wear and tear and general abuse will cut the number of them in circulation rapidly, and there are far fewer of them in circulation than a lot of people assume.

Even if another batch is found somewhere, I sincerely doubt we'll ever see another $200 SVT xmas special again. More like $500-$600 special.

'suppose I'll have to put in some more effort to try to get it to shoot straight.

Pity the lack of ranges near Calgary.

Anyone know a good algorithm for checking bedding?

Surprisingly little accurizing info is out there for these. Horilka might know a few tricks. I've hear people have had luck corking the barrel, but never seen it live. I'm tempted to go this route on mine, because it's fairly non-invasive and reversible.

Exactly. If they are selling privately for $500 to $600 i don't see a dealer coming in and selling them for $300.

SVT love

Took my SVT with the 12 port flash hider on it out to the range the other day. Found some Herters 150gr non corrosive ammo. worked reliably, got 3-4" 5 shot groups at 100 yds,a bit worse than my Garand with old, old LCball. The rifle flips about abit, much less recoil than the Garand even though it is considerably lighter. Fun gun and , my word , is it loud. Useful as a counter measure for whippersnappers who set up next to me with one of those muzzle brakes that look it came off a Star Wars movie;)I think with good loads I could probably get it down to 2-3". But really fun to shoot. Think these will be getting harder to come by as time goes by. If the Germans used them in the dark times they must be fairly good doing what they were designed to do.

The 12 port rifle is considerably louder than the 4 port version, useful info when planned use is creating elbow room at the range, Fudd's revenge.

4 port was a modification due to complaints from the front about hearing damage.

There is a slomo video on YouTube showing barrel whip, so getting 4moa is about right. Vertical stringing is common too. AVT stock with two cross bolts some of them got during refurb helps with longevity of the rifle. Check the sticky by Horilka, lots of good info there.

my 1940 tula shoots amazingly well with the Bulgarian surplus silver tip. Have yet to try the newer norc stuff. It has all been force matched, but seems to retain every feature for an early svt down to the mag, trigger group, stock and muzzle brake. Best $200 ever ;)

Do you guys install original SVT40 scopes on SVT40 with rails.. what if your SVT doesn't have a groove to fit the locking pin... which is in the back of the scope? do you cut through the rear end of your receiver?

Thanks

Bradley cheek rest

Makes this rifle so much more fun :)

A chainsaw file worked great to make a notch. I made it exactly where the crosspin goes so I have no movement in my scope base. I also used devcon in the rail slots to make sure it was properly bedded.

Don't you need to bed stock? Action was shifting in the stock and no end-user shimming could help this, so soviets went back to mosin snipers, which maintained zero during use.

Fitting of original rifles was better then refurbs fitting. Even with better fitting it was not up to the specifications provided by Tokarev, manufacturing and QC issues.

So if i have Podolsk 1941 with receiver SN and stock SN matching, is it possible that it is an original stock? Or soviets force-matched the stocks too?

My second SVT has AVT stock and numbers don't match.

I don't see why I could not be original. However if it was refurb ed it could have been refurb ed once and stamped. I think some firearms were refurb ed more than once. Still if it holds tight you have a winner. I scoped my Izzy with match serial ed stock. It holds tight

However I did have an SVT briefly last year which was very loose and had approx 3-5mm daylight of play btw the stock and action/reciever so it would slide with hand pressure. I never shot it, sold for a reasonable price.
