. It doesn't specify which 4831 but after consulting my Nosler manual I saw that the starting load for a 140gn bullet with IMR 4831 is 40.5gn and for H4831 it is 43.0gn, so 40 grains of either should be safe enough.
If labelled 4831 its usually the slower powder, it looks like you experienced a strange phenomenon (some call it S.E.E) that happens when a low charge of a slow powder does not ignite properly because of lower case volume. You can Ask Baribal about it......he blew off the top of his receiver ring on an M94 with a starting load of IMR-4831
There is no universal concensus on S.E.E , Bruce Hodgdon called it hogwash while PO Ackley and Jack O'Connor believe in it but had problems duplicating it in a controlled setting. I read that Norma was able to duplicate S.E.E in their lab.
...and who says an M94 can't handle a hot load....no gas escaped, no ill effects. Those are the hottest loads I've ever fired by far.
Lot of people spew a lot about how Swedish mausers are weak actions...I dont' think they are all that weak (maybe quite brittle though)......Some Gunsmith were converting them into .308 win and 22-250 sporters back when sporterizing Military actions was more common.....you dont' hear about a lot of them blowing up .
.
Just my opinion.
