Many guys think this, and many guys do buy scopes in the US and bring them back across the boarder. You cannot legally export a scope out of the US without a permit. If you get stopped on your way out of the US expect it to be confiscated at best.

Will you get caught? Maybe. Are you willing to risk it?

Probably because they solicited advice from tactical shooters before building it, rather than just 3-gunners. Most of the lower end offerings have features that are tailored to them.

It just takes once. They're set up just before Canada Customs, little booth with a bunch of green/white SUV's. They ask if you have any firearms, firearms parts,ammunition,optics,etc. If you do, you must declare so and they'll likely be confiscated and you could be fined. If you lie and say you have nothing, pray they don't search your vehicle and find something, it may be your last trip to the US for a while.
There are still many people out there who unknowingly bring these items into Canada, as they themselves and many retailers in the US are largely unaware of the legalities.
 
I was down at SWFA a few years ago and offered to become a Cdn distributor for them. A flat NO was the answer. Not interested in shipping to Canada and getting involved with export permits was the reason. The owner claimed it wasn't worth the expense and he makes a tidy sum just selling to Americans only.
