Swiss Arms Over The Beach Shooting UPDATE, Final Results and Conclusions Post #108

Steve please make more video's, your beach test has had a very positive effect on the number of inquires in regards to my Swiss for sale in EE and just think maybe Swiss Arms will take you on staff like IWI has with a certain tavor aficionado...

I've got to try this :p

While I know your kidding, some people who've commented seem at least semi serious about perhaps giving this a shot themselves, and so I feel I should address it. As many have said, I am freakin nuts. This is a polite way of saying I am freakin stupid ;) simply, this is horrible for your rifle and can cause serious damage if not catastrophic failure.

I had one guy msg me and tell me to really be careful, that during some law enforcement testing they blew up a 551 doing exactly this test. Just because I did it doesn't mean everyone should be trying this with there rifles. Regardless of what rifle it is, I would strongly advise against trying this at home! Unless you have massively huge ca hones, and a spare barrel or two :)

Does anyone know of anyone that could build a 1:8 barrel for one of these? I've had .223 rifles with 1:7, 1:8, and 1:9 and may favorite by far was 20" AR with 1:8 and Wylde chamber. It shot everything well.

You could have Dlask or some other smith install a lothar Walther 1/8 223 wylde on your SAN if that is what you require.

Manufacturers make what the market asks for. Military Ball ammo is not the only ammo LEO's have to shoot. Check out the ammo offerings from Black Hills and Hornady TAP. The good stuff is heavy and requires fast twist.

I'm going to see how the 1:7 works with everything from 40-77gr and then decide what to do. I will be shooting mostly 55gr FMJ but will probably put together some v-max loads for it and try to get them shooting well. If the 1:7 works well with the 55's then I'll just leave it alone and enjoy it the way it is.
I've owned .223 semi's in 1:7, 1:8, and 1:9 and found 1:8 to be the most versatile of the three.

So Steve, what's the next video going to be of? Got any "test vids" planned?

You should be fine with the 1in7" twist, it's very versatile, as many have also stated.

As for further testing, I don't really have any plans for more. But I love doing it. This is the first time I can really say that I've performed an actual "destructive" test. Normally I just shoot a lot ;) The problem with destructive testing of course, is it is often just that, destructive. I'm not made of money and while I may do some crazy things, believe it or not, I'm not entirely nuts. I have no desire to destroy my rifle. If anyone has any idea's as to further tests, just let me know and I'll see what I can put together. As long as they don't destroy the rifle I'll probably try it.

Wonder how many rounds can be fired through that rifle without cleaning before it fails

I've only ever gone as far as 1000 rounds without cleaning and not surprisingly never experienced an issue due to carbon build up or fouling. 500-600 rounds without cleaning over a two day course has never caused issue. Really it's not much dirtier after 5-600 rounds than it is after 200. Realistically, I believe you could shoot several thousands of rounds without cleaning.

How about a swiss mag vs. usgi mag durability test?? I'd be interested in the results, run over test, drop test...etc, throw a pmag in there as well for ####s and giggles...I'll supply the AR mag(not the pmag though, i'm not made of money LOL)

I would put Swiss Arms mags on par with PMags for reliability and durability. There's no question that they are more durable than a USGI aluminum mag.

thank you, this is my point as well.

Sounds like a plan to me,

Already done that. If you drop an AR with a loaded magazine and the bolt closed the magazine is very likely to break. US GI magazines will fail for sure, this is because magazine lips rest right against the bolt, unlike the Swiss rifle.

Otherwise the pmags are more or less as good as the original Swiss magazines.

What do you mean? I just paid $21.99 each for new pmags a couple weeks ago. The only place they are ridiculously overpriced is on our very own EE.
