Swiss Arms Over The Beach Shooting UPDATE, Final Results and Conclusions Post #108

What do you mean? I just paid $21.99 each for new pmags a couple weeks ago. The only place they are ridiculously overpriced is on our very own EE.

Exactly, why would i try to break a 22 dollar mag when i can sell it for 50 or 60...or better yet my beowolf mags that are being sold for 250 on the EE.

Swiss mags are made of a proprietary material and are significantly tougher than USGI, Pmags et al. In the grand scheme of things that is not really relevant as most guys have access to all the mags they need and if one breaks, just replace it.

If you need a rifle with only one mag for the life of the rifle and are heading into the woods never to come out, then yes it makes a difference ( the swiss has no equal in this scenario) . otherwise its kind of a moot point.

Taken direct from Wikipedia:

These problems have been addressed by several manufacturers, most notably Heckler & Koch, who designed a new 30-round STANAG-compatible box magazine during their contract to rebuild and improve the SA80 rifle for the United Kingdom.

Look around the web to see what Larry Vickers thinks about HK mags. They pale in comparison to Magpul mags and cost almost 6x what GI mags cost.

I've had and used the HK magazines.

They are not like any USGI magazine you've had before.

They took a lot of #### early on. But these days genuine german magazines are slick in every way.

But yes: they are pricey bastards. I didn't keep mine.

I have no idea what LV thinks of HK mags, and I won't be using them anytime soon either. I wasn't trying to promote them as being quality, I was just using that to illustrate a point: STANAG mags have always had issues, and they have been trying to come out with new and improved fixes for them since the beginning of time. Hence the creation of the Pmag

Are the canam mags the same as the Swiss?? Same material, quality and such??
What type of material is it, thermoset or thermoplastic??

The Canam mags are made of similar materials, but not exactly the same, and yet in my experience they are just as tough if not tougher than the OEM mags. All of it is some kind of plastic as far as I know.

Hard plastic or pliable polymer??

Canada ammo brings in the Dominion Defense magazines. Dominion Defense makes three different kinds of Swiss magazines, Black(NON Transparent), Black(Transparent) and Yellow . Each is made of a different plastic.

-Black(Non Transparent) are apparently lesser quality than the OEM mags.

-Black(Transparent) are apparently on par with OEM mags for quality of materials.

-Yellow dominion defense magazines are made of a product called Radel-5000, it is apparently similar to what a lot of medical instruments are made of, designed to withstand thousands of dis infective heat treatments, and hot washes. These are apparently superior to OEM mags.

-And then of course there is the OEM mags, no one really knows what kind of plastic their really made of.

All are plastic. All are tough, and reliable. I have very little experience with the Black(NON transparent) but have used all of the others quite extensively, and would vouch for their toughness and reliability any day of the week.

I own an HK 5/30 and that thing must weight at least double what my stainless Cproducts mags weigh. They are insanely overbuilt. Mine has been 100% reliable and other than being pinned to exactly 5 instead of 5.5 it is great. Best trade I ever made, traded it for a regular 5 round mag I picked up at western gun parts a few years ago for $25 :D

Have 4 new in package dominion mags in the mail on their way to my house now, wish I had a Swiss mag besides the original 5 round to compare them to.

Out of the ones I have the 5/20 SIG mags are the most robust and feel like a different material than the 5/30 SIG mags.

Sometimes molded plastics have the abbreviation of the material, HDPE is High Density Polyethylene, as an example. Usually it seems to be around the production clock(I don't know the correct term, but that's what it looks like). My Pmags have the production clock, but don't seem to have the material abbreviation.

Some day ill need to find a restricted range with a river through it. Time to give that marsec-rated nea a test. ;)

What is marsec rated?
If it's DI operated do not fill it with water and shoot it. There are plenty of YouTube vids of AR's self destructing from water tests. They must be drained first.

Be safe and take video of everything :)

Unfortunately it seems we are starting to see people getting ideas in their heads that it's safe to do this type of "testing" with their rifles and that cheaper rifles which would be less financial risk if destroyed are worth consideration.

EVERYONE! DO NOT DO THIS WITH AN AR! Do not do this with most rifles.
If you want a good reason not to just YouTube it and see what happens.
The Swiss Arms and a few others are designed and extensively tested by the manufacturer to survive this. It is not good for your rifle and can result in catastrophic failure and could result in serious injury.

The best videos I can remember showing what happens to an AR when it's full of water was in the Rob Arms XCR vids. The AR's were completely destroyed.

Be safe!

Just don't try this with any rifle your not willing to replace. If your aware and prepared for the possibility of completely destroying the rifle, then go for it :) And film it for our pleasure.

I was willing to take the risk. That being said, many consider me an crazy fool ;) Some others may be willing to take the risk as well, my message to those individuals is to be safe, plan ahead, and just be mentally and financially prepared to replace the gun, or major parts of it, because things can, and likely will, get damaged.
