Swiss Arms

Here's a question: are these rifles simply being prohib'd because the RCMP believes they are built on recycled military receivers? Maybe there is a manufacturer out there who'd love to build 1000 or so new receivers under a new FRT#? If I had one I'd be stripping the parts off it right now.
Also, what's the compatibility with the SIG rifles coming up from South America? Aren't they copied off a Swiss design or am I mistaken? I unfortunately haven't had the pleasure of owning one.
My last question, are the other versions under review as well or do they all have separate FRT#?

*posted this in one of the other threads. Just curious if anyone has some answers...

I'm not 100% informed on the entire matter. Anyone please set me straight if I'm wrong.
Everything I have read about this whole fiasco (TSC throwing the whole thing and all firearms owners under the bus included) is that the rifles were built on what was essentially a full auto capable reciever, they were just assembled as only being capable of semi auto fire. This would clearly put the rifle in the prohib status as far as gun laws in Canada since 1992 would it not?

Once the RCMP caught wind of this due to the efforts of TSC to bring it to light.....they applied long existing and established regulation to land the rifle in the prohibited category. It's pretty cut and dry. They didn't seem to bend any rules or "create new laws" to get this specific model in the prohib category as far as I know?

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here. I haven't ever seen a bare bones non emotionally charged thread on this. Just finger pointing and hysterics and people talking vaguely while winking etc etc. But again, I don't live on the forum all day long.

The RCMP reclassified this rifle based on some pretty solid facts if this is the case. At the same time they are issuing non restricted FRT's for scary black Communist Bull Pups and other scary black rifles ala FAMAE SG542 built on semi auto specific receivers as frequently as they are submitted these days.

Do I think it's wrong that they won't be compensating people for it? Hell yes I think it's wrong.
Do I agree with the inane firearms regulations making a rifle "easily converted to fire fully automatic"? Hell no.

Still the real root of this issue lies with the actual regulations and the classification system itself which has been around for many years now. Sadly this model Swiss Arms fell on the wrong side of the thin line. In this case it fell pretty clearly from all the information I've seen.

But that's what we live under in Canada unfortunately :( Keep fighting the good fight.

All we can do is write letters at this point. I don't own one but I don't want to see any of my other firearms reclassified.
Here is my letter to my MP.
Dear Mr. Ching,
Even at 29 years old I have been a strong conservative supporter my entire life. This was strengthened with the decommissioning of the long gun registry. However, as of today you have lost my vote unless there is something done about the abuse of power at RCMP. Nearly 2000 legal gun owners bought the Swiss arms green/black classic rifle at a price of nearly $4000 dollars apiece . The RCMP had declared this rifle to be non-restricted and over night last night pushed through a reclassification to prohibited status. In doing so they have declared no responsibility for financial compensation to the lawful owners and importers of this firearm.
I worry that this is a slippery slope situation whereby the rights of legal firearms owners will be trampled up-on again and again. I hope that you will stand for the rights of your rural and firearms owning constituents and stand up to this horrendous abuse of power.
Thank-you

Well said. We all have to stand together on this, and I for one am writing my MP today as well. This could open the door to more reclassification if we just lie down and take it.

I agree - I do not own one but I absolutely wish to stand with those who do and resist this nonsense.

I am going to buy a pack of carbon copy papers from Staples today and will be sending out some letters.

Just to confirm what most of you know already ,,,,,,,,,,, I got this confirmed by Sheldon Clare ( NFA) today.
RCMP just did it yesterday.

He also said ,,,,,,,,,, MORE CHANGES may come to ANTIQUE HANDGUNS in modern cal. ?

ok, you have made your points and some of them do make a lot more sense now.

but as a transparency, responsible government, should they not make the procedure of "converting to full auto" public? I mean, when you accuse someone, you need evidence don't you? You can't just close the door and someday come back out declaring you know something is illegal and you refuse to say how and why.

2. if long gun registry Data were really deleted....how do they know who still has this gun and who does not ? if they bring a search warrant to tear down someone's house, then there is a big giant federal flaw on Parliament law execution is it not ??? now if RCMP breaks the law themselves, who will go and throw these guys into jail ????

3. what about the compensation ? the RCMP told us this gun was totally OKAY to buy 10 years ago, and people just spent 3000$ on it. Now they all of the sudden show up and say it's illegal, you can have it. Hand it over for free or jail time, what do you say? Car is too big as an example, but let's narrow it down. If you had a Mustang GT, or any other car with more than 5L, and the government said you could have it, of course it's a freedom country. Then someday the government come out and say NO NO NO, we need to reduce the pollution and yall bad for using such big emission cars, Canadian government now for the sake of environment and the public health hereby declare any car that is above 5L illegal. Hand them over for destruction or Jail time.

what would you say by then?

the gun law itself is a joke

Unfortunately this is not the case. It has been reclassified based on the determination that it is a variant of a named prohib the SG-550. So essentially it's being prohibited on the basis of a bureaucratic re-determination of an original arbitrary classification.
There were some receivers that had entered the country that were converted autos but it seems at this point that they may never have been in civilian hand. Only in storage in a shop that is licensed to have them legally.
The two businesses at the center of this both have built full auto versions for local law enforcement and thus can have components that would be prohibited for an individual.

wake up and do what? 2 million is far from enough. 4 million makes more sense but that 2 million gave up licensing when the stupid law came out the first place.

so the politicians will keep raping you to fawn the Toronto urban anti's .

you know, GTA itself has 7 million population, already 3.5 times more than the gun crowds of entire Canada.

Yep.. But most Libtards and dippers are too lazy to vote... The last few times a federal party chafted the gun owners, they got busted at the next election because most gun owners voted against their party! Basically, go for more gun restrictions, lose the elections... Except in Morontreal and Moronto....

I am locking this on behalf of MD - please direct your discussion of politics to one of the on-going topics in the political forums.
