Which size magazine is best for this rifle overall?

I don't understand the pricing on the mags given they are all 5 rd or pinned to 5:

5 rd $75
20 rd $50
30 rd $60

Are the 5 rd ones more reliable than the others?

Are the 20 & 30 rounders preferred because you can attach them to each other?

Are they faster for reloads?

Are the mags used as a monopod ie. prone for service rifle?

I would have thought the larger mags would be more expensive given that they require added labour to pin them in contrast to the factory 5 rd ones.

Any thoughts?
 
20 rounds for the regular rifle.
I ended up buying 2 30/5 rounders just because that's what my local store had. That being said, I really wanted the 20 rounders. :(
 
I'd say 30 because you have the surface area to grab onto. Prone doesn't seem to be a problem with the Classic Green or Black Special because the bipod gives you good room to move around.

Although 20 rounders do take up less space.



The 5 rounders are pretty much useless, they're more expencive due to the lack of demand, and the low production quantities. And harder to manipulate in mag pouches or in your hands, if 3-gun type competition is what your looking at.
 
Yes you will want 30s for service rifle to rest the mag and using the bipod will change the POI drastically.

2nd that. I think from an aesthetic point of view the 20s look the best. I don't think anyone has any in stock right now.

I like the using the 5s for sighting in, since the gun won't properly fit into my Caldwell lead-sled with the 20s or 30s.
 
The reason for the pricing differences is volume of production. The Swiss military adopted the 20rd mag first and it is/was produced in the greatest numbers. Thus it is the cheapest. Conversly, the 5rd mag is produced in the fewest numbers and is the most expensive. FWIW I will have 20/5rd mags available for sale next week.
 
I own all three versions. The 30/5 look uber cool in my CQB, just wish we could legally still own un-neutered mags! The 20/5 seem to complement the full size Classic Green/Blue Star best and I find when firing prone from the bipod the 20s work a lot better than the 30s, especially if firing from non-level/cleared ground. For hunting 'yotes, etc...I usually stick with the 5 rounders. Rifle is easier to carry and beat through the bush without an extra 6" of magazine sticking out the bottom. I dunno what mag will look best with the Carbine, but I'm going to find out in the Fall once the new SA Rifle Fund "matures!" :)
 
The main reason I want the 20/5 mags is the fact that it's what is used in the 550 (Well 20 round mags anyways). The 30 rounders I believe were only used for the CQB. Plus I think it's the best all around, especially since we can only have 5 rounds no matter what the maximum capacity is.

I'll check in with the shooting Edge next week for some. My current gun store has been letting me down lately. 6 months and counting for Hogue grips, They sold the 4 boxes of Federal Match 168 grain .308 that was "set aside" for me, and a year now for the 20/5 round mags to come in. I've given them a shot with the stuff that I didn't need right away, but we're at the point now that I'm sick of waiting. CCN sponsors haven't let me down yet.
 
I use the 5 round mags when I am out and about hunting. They function just fine and I have never had a problem with awkward mag changes. They fit in my jacket pocket waaay better than the 20 or 30 round mags. The 20 and 30 round mags IMO just make the rifle look like a military assault rifle and do not really add to the rifle's functionality. Hunting with a 20 or 30 round mag increases the chances of some ignorant idiot calling the authorities about a guy waling around with a "machine gun".
BTW using the mag as a rifle rest when shooting can actually lead to misfeeds or mag wear since these are essentially plastic.

Unless you drag it over rocks while shooting you don't need to worry. I shoot mine off the mag all the time and have used the same magazine for 5 years without a problem.

A 5 round mag is not a standard size. They're usually made out of larger mags. Hence the higher cost.
 
5/30's are the way to go. Once you get used to them they look better than the 5/20's.

I have been resting off the mag in Service Rifle matches for about 7 years now. No problems, the mags are very tough and attach very "sturdy".

Resting off of the mag will not cause feeding problems with the Classic Green / 550 series of rifles. Don't mean to insult anyone here but anyone who says differently doesn't have enough experience to know any better and is just saying what they think from the arm chair and not experience (there's alot of that on the internet).
