I'm looking at moving from my Viper PST 6-24 to a GenI Razor 5-20. Anyone who owns/has owned both, does the better glass in the Razor offset the lower magnification enough to justify the change?

Magnification number is pretty much meaningless when you compare different models/glass quality scopes.

Field of view, tint, effective eye relive, light transmission, tunneling, distortion on the edges is way more important than 20 vs 24 "magnification".

Optics is not a photo on a flat screen you can zoom in and out more or less.

Would it matter for you enough to justify the change? No one can tell you how it would feel for you, sorry )

Oh yeah, big difference in its ability to resolve.
Mag doesn't mean much with mediocre glass, which the pst could be defined as.

I have seen the turret caps slip on mine and two other PST's. The friction set screws just aren't very good. That alone is reason enough to upgrade.

I went to the Bushnell ERS 3.5-21x with G2 reticle but I wish I would have got something with illumination. The turret caps lock into the scope with gear like teeth. It's not perfect but way better than the PST.

Owning a 6-25 pst and having used gen 1 and gen 2 razors, the gen 1 has much better clarity than the pst. But I saved my nickels for S&b. If you can get a killer deal on the gen 1, then it's worth it. Otherwise look for a gen 2 or better. The gen 1 also has 35mm tube which is a bit trickier to find rings for. The vortex rings are probably your safest bet.

Thanks guy, this is what I was looking for. My S&B doesn't have the reticle type I want, so it stays on my Timberwolf. I would love to get a Gen 2, but that is a lot of extra nickels.

I meant to say friction lock set screws not slipping. Don't know how I messed that up. Anyways.

You have a Timberwolf with a S&B so I probably don't have to tell you but get the scope you want or even one better. You will never wish you had bought a worse scope.

I've used the PST, Gen1 Razor, and now have the gen2 Razor. All great scopes for their respective price levels. Get the best you can afford

How does the Viper PST compare to the vortex viper. They are at the top of my budget. I'm reading here that the Razor is better but I would expect that from the price difference.

The Viper and the PST are the same scope I think. Viper is the line and the PST is the specific model.

Went into Cabelas and took a look at a Razor gen2. Bloody hell thats one heavy scope!
Glass seemed excellent, at least in the store. Kinda weird the parallax marks are in yards on a mil scope. Clicks were good, and zoom ring a lot looser then on my PST.
Probably going to pick one up at the end of the month during the HH sale.

I guess I was referring to the viper 6.5-20PA model. Or are all Viper model the same? I'm hoping that the viper PST is better than the crossfireII.

I am not a Vortex expert. I have had a few of their products. I did not know there were Vipers in other lines. I know there is an HS and PST version of the Viper. They are a lot more money than the Crossfire so in theory you should get a better product.

I personally feel that Vortex tried to do a little too much for the price and that the scopes are a bit fragile. They have a great warranty but if your scope breaks in the field you're done for the day.

Some people may have had better luck with them and that's great. I wish mine had been more reliable (like I said earlier the scope caps slipped) because for the price the glass was very clear and I liked the reticle.

Did you buy your scope yet?
Myself still debating viper pst gen ll vs razor gen l vs razor gen ll

Yes in an ideal world i would get razor gen ll, but just got into 308 and just spent over 4000$ in rifle/reload/chassis setup

So either i buy pst gen ll cash, or razor gen ll credit

Seems like pst gen ll actually have razor gen 1 turrets fyi.
True zero stops with definate clicks.
I am sure the pst gen ll will heavily compete with razor gen l
