Switzer's Auction today

I was tickled pink to win a job lot of miscellaneous parts. Wanted one particular part in the lot - a critical part for a not very common rifle that I have been trying to find for a couple of years.

Buyers pays 15% premium, sometimes additional 3% if paid by credit card, plus taxes, so in B.C. It’s 5% + 7% and now add on shipping, last month one 9lb gun plus scope go charged $148 which was to much. So when I’m looking at buying you need to add 30% to the purchase. Still on occasion everyone else is asleep and you can slip in a reasonable bid.

and no need to provide multiple pictures for the collectors, no need to provide a "three day inspection period with return costs split", no need to "negotiate" who pays for insurance, no flakes who back out after saying they'll take it because their girlfriend's cat needs a hysterectomy or their truck needs a transmission, no need to provide fodder for the old biddies starting threads about how stupid the asking price is............... ETC.

You still have to do the math. Can you expect to fetch 20%-25% more than you would on EE to cover the consignor fees and will a buyer be willing to pay 25%+ (depending on province) to cover the buyers premium and taxes? I agree selling on EE can be a pain and frustrating sometimes, and i have certainly experienced my share a bad buyers, but auctions can go both ways I am sure. I guess its like selling a house, with or without an agent...?

The seller doesn't pay tax. Just the buyer
However,... I've found that the consignors often bid on their own items to jack up the sale price, which is partly responsible for the insane prices some items sell for

Play that game too much and you'll end up paying 40% just to keep your item.

Seeing as this thread is about Switzers auction, are you stating that this occurs at Switzers?
Their posted rules specifically prohibit this practice. They will stop it if they see it happening. Keep in mind they have the personal information identifying consignors and bidders, and would know if a consignor is bidding on an item.

I am sure some sellers cheat. But with 6,000 items or more in an auction it's not enough to account for the enthusiastic prices realized as we've seen in the last number of years.....

Most auction houses have that rule. The consignor cannot bid on his own items and cannot have someone else bid on their behalf.
There have been other threads on this site where CGN'rs have openly admitted to the practice.

How they going to stop them from having some one bid up the price. Thou there is online auctions where they do allow you to bid on your own stuff but only charge a certain amount of commission ,

Not to mention if they have fake accounts, or simply have a friend bid on it. Unethical, but other than not allowing the consigners username itself from bidding, a very difficult practice to stop or prevent.

Saw you bid on those mp5 mags. Glad you are happy with what you got and that the manual will be appreciated (It was someone I know who got some of the other mags)

That FAL is a Singapore Police Force example - I personally love the look of their stocks even if they tend to be too short in the LOP department.

The RNWP (or RCMP) stuff always brings ridiculous prices at auction from police collectors. Also probably puts them on more watch lists nowadays.

Side note for the Ottawa area folks - I usually drive up to Switzers to pick up, want to join efforts?

i'll put you in my friends list, would be nice to share cost of gas to do pickups. i drive a ram, so mine have been canada post but lately even that is pricey, so i have been watching my purchases.
