Synthetic Motor Oil as a Gun Oil

For enclosed triggers, use Ronson Lighter fluid - I believe that is from the Timney website. Had a real mess with a Schultz and Larson that had decades of dried up oils that had dripped down from action into trigger box - significant goop in there. The lighter fluid seeps everywhere, then most evaporates off leaving very fine lubricant behind.

Great tip thanks

I use something called "metal protective oil". It's a Texaco product that I found at a clearance sale at the local Co-op. I bought a 45 gallon drum of it and I use it on guns, machinery parts and anything else made of steel. It's very sticky and viscous. It's great for storage, probably not the best thing for guns that are actually being used, but since our government in its wisdom has decided that my guns are prohibs that can never be fired again it's perfect for mine.

ANy takers for Ballistol..I believe it has none of the down side issues

I used to bring it back with me from Germany all the time.. now it is sold in a few places here in Ontario. Anschütz also have a new product, Keramik Coat and it looks interesting. Will be getting some to try out.

I usually buy the can non spray or the pump if available it goes further and is cheaper in the long run I find, I poor into little ceramic or stainless steel cups I buy at the dollar store for application

I use ballistol, particularly in stuff where I've shot corrosive primed ammunition. Makes water cleanup a bit nicer.

Otherwise I mostly stick with synthetic bearing grease. I don't shoot below 0c, though. I freeze up before the gun has a chance to, if I do.

So what kind of oil would you fill a PVC pipe that contains a polymer firearm?

Asking for a friend. Mobil 1 5W30?
Depends on where that pipe is stored. Lower viscosity 0w oils are better for lower temperatures

Below the frost line, the ground temperature is pretty stable. I would use Ballistol. I'm assuming you want to bury said PVC pipe?

I wouldn't, I'd be concerned that the oil would have an effect on the plastic /polymer during long term storage. I'd coat the metal parts with Fluid Film, or perhaps even fill the pvc pipe with that, over a petroleum based oil

I guess in a pinch, Any motor oil will work, I have used sewing oil before. Branded gun oil is pricey for what it is, after reading through this thread.

Ballistol, fine for polymer guns yeah? Sounds good.
From Ballistol website (in part):
PLASTICS AND PAINTS

Ballistol will not negatively affect plastic materials or paints which are chemically resistant to oils. Specifically, Ballistol will not adversely affect PVC, high pressure Polyethylenes, mipolam, teflon-derivatives or hostaflon-derivatives.

It's been in use by the military for a very long time and recommended by Hickok45 you can't get a better recommendation that that

Recently picked up a quart of Royal Purple 15W40 oil. Got it at Crappy Tire the last quart bottle they had on sale for $7.95 Seems to be working well in my pistols. The stuff is actually purple as the name implies and a true all synthetic oil, not a blend.
