T2 Garand - Part 1

Do you know how to remove the trigger group so the stock can be separated? There has to be some barrel markings somewhere on it.

Thanks guys but like I said not today, my place feels like an oven. Ill disassemble it next weekend and take out all the cosmoline and clean it up.
here is something to hold you over:

What we see from the photos so far;

1. The rifle is assembled on a Danish surplus Beretta receiver, just like a lot of Garands that people here have built up on the inexpensive Surplus Danish receivers. It shows Danish military property marks and is not marked on the flat of the receiver heel with "7.62-2" as are the bona fide Italian arsenal built rifles. The Italian arsenals didn't use surplus Danish receivers to build Tipo 2 rifles for the Italian military.

2. The op rod is legit and is marked as for the Tipo 2 rifles. Interestingly, the side of the hump portion is not bevelled as are the 5 Tipo 2 op rods that I've owned.

3. The German assembler's markings are the same as the ones shown on the Marstar website.

I'm interested to see the barrel markings on these rifles. It will also be interesting to hear how the headspace measures on them-.308 Win or 7.62 NATO. They are marked .308 Win by the German assembler, but the Italians chambered them for the 7.62x51

I got mine today too. Brand new matching wood on mine. Everything but the gas cylinder looks new. The gas cylinder has some very slight wear. Mine is on a Danish marked Beretta receiver. I can't see any markings on the barrel behind the OP rod either. I took the stock off and still can't see any markings on the barrel. My stock is marked Sile in the inside of the stock's barrel channel. The OP rod is marked 7.62 mm/2 on the side and D35382BMB on the inside directly under the Chamber area. The trigger group is PB marked with PB marked hammer. 19SA D17 Bolt. Packed with cosmoline so a full detail strip and clean is in order! I took it as far down as to take off the gas cylinder and front handguard and there still are no barrel markings. I did also notice that the gas cylinder was installed tightly against the front handguard so when you clean it, make sure you leave a gap there so the front handguard can move slightly back and forth or you run the risk of cracking the handguard with barrel whip! Oh, and my front sight was not tilted. Although I paid the $25 to make sure it wasn't!

Overall very nice rifle! It would be interesting to hear the actual story on these!

Too late now, but I'll try and get some pics tomorrow.

My understanding is that SILE is an Italian stockmaker who contracted for the Italian military in addition to making various types stocks for export . Some of the original Breda Garand stocks that I've had were made and marked by SILE. SILE also made replacement Garand stocks for the Italian military. The original Breda Garand stocks are stamped SILE in the interior around the buttplate trap area. The replacement stocks that I've had are stamped inside the barrel channel. The SILE stocks that I've had are well made and fitted up nicely.

So what is the verdict so far? Are these or are they not T2 rifles? Seems to me that it is looking like they are not.

Interesting that the one poster said his rifle is full of cosmoline suggesting it did indeed come from storage and is not a "commercial" rifle newly made up for export. But the markings don't match the known T2 markings.

I don't know....suspect to say the least. No barrel marking at all which is not correct, Danish receivers which are not correct, only "T2" marking is on the oprods, and they are not cut like other known examples.
Might be a good idea for owners to take some barrel/oprod/wood measurements just to see if they are the correct lengths lol.
Any mag blocks in any of these so far? The rusty oprod is not what I would expect on a Terni built and stored rifle either.

i bought one of the nos sile MT stocks converted by numrich back to original length and it was top notch, fitting perfectly. came in the original wrapper too.

lots of details not really adding up on these rifles... barrels should have markings of some kind.

I'd rather a tanker for that price.

For $2000 you could build one hell of a nice Garand....
I know it's been stated by some dealers already that the Koreans want $500-$600 per M1 rifle they are sitting on, and they don't think it's worth it as the Canadian market wouldn't buy $2000 Garands which is where it would need to retail to be worth it.
These sold out in a day....and the funny thing is, the second sentence in the Marstar ad says "Take a moment to research this model." Doesn't seem like people care...hell I may as well throw some 308 barrels on my Danes and sell them for $2k. Then sell the ####ty VAR barrels for a few hundred each lol.
This is the SILE stamp on the 1950's era Italian M1's

Also a .308 I built with a Douglass heavy barrel....gave up on it once I started loading 30'06...reloading is your BEST friend.

I was reading this thread on an other site h ttp://forums.thecmp.org/showthread.php?t=73601 which has a lot of great info on Breda/berettas and the Tipo 2.

The last page has this link http://www.flickr.com/photos/15631192@N04/4940321650/ which talks about the Tipo 2 as being chambered in .308 Win/7.62 Match.

An interesting read :)

I got my two M1 garand today. One look almost new like just came from factory, other one look new too except the Op-rod, that's going to be a shooter. The other one will stay in cosmoline and go to storage with my other milsurp collection.

Let's have some photos - specifically of manufacturing stamps and acceptance marks, if nothing more than for education of what these are or are not.
According to my emails, I'll be receiving mine on Thursday.

so any advice on cleaning up the rusty oprod and the cosmoline?
I am guessing lots of elbow grease and CLP.

Yeah, send it back for a refund.... you paid $1600+tax/shipping for an Excellent condition "T2" .308 Garand. There is no "rusty parts" allowed in NRA Excellent condition grading....
EXCELLENT: New condition, used but little, no noticeable marring of wood or metal, bluing perfect, (except at muzzle or sharp edges).
They are also not T2 Garands....get your money back.
