Looking for my first black rifle, Due to price the T97 is perfect. But I havent seen many accuracy videos to see it in action. I would like a rifle maybe one day I could throw a scope on and shoot some longer ranges. This possible with the T97? My second choice would be the benelli MR1, i seen people hitting 600 yards with the MR1 but if the T97 can get close to that I would be happy.

CBP,
You get what you pay for. T97 with the FTU can mount a good scope. I am personally not a fan of the Benelli or Beretta Storm. I find them too plasticky with small controls. I recently played with the Beretta ARX- 100 at SHOT. It is a pretty .223 rifle but, again, feels cheap with awkward controls. Not sure why Beretta has gone in this looks over substance direction. These guns aren't cheap either, retailing around the $2000 mark. The new Keltec RDB bullpup looks promising. Its price point will probably be closer to the XCRs and Tavors but is a solid rifle. The only drawback for me is the mag release and the position of the safety. Probably won't be here for a couple of years yet.

As seen in other threads on accuracy of black rifles, there are none available in Canada, R or NR, that are capable of 1 MOA or better without breaking the bank. A good .223 bolt action will do the trick for much less if accuracy is what you are after.

Bad luck for me on the Benelli M1, A lot f failure to feed and eject. I only fired it in 30 yard and 50 yard scenarios, so cant really comment on accuracy at a distance. No real accessories to buy. I sold mine.

hitting what at 600 yards? a Barn?
my MR1 was very disappointing to me. 4-6 MOA.
took the same ammo and the same scope, ran them on a 16" bushmaster and got 1.5MOA, would have been much tighter, but I threw a flier.
If its accuracy you want, then rule out the MR1 and save yourself the headache

heres a target from my MR1. shot from a rest. I don't have pics from the AR, but the middle spade would be gone, with one not in the spade. As you can see; the MR1 couldn't keep all shots on the card.

hmm, That interesting to see the accuracy on the MR1. Thats not very promising. There is a precision shooting video on youtube showing guys hitting gongs at 600. I was pretty impressed but after hearing all this it seems pretty rough.

Lot of internet sub moa groups and accuracy claims on various semis. I almost fell for the MR1 internet accuracy AND did fall for the Browning BAR Bull#### accuracy. Sold it quickly and bought a XCR. At least I have shot honest 1" and 1 1/4 in. groups prone, off bipod and bag, factory ammo. with the XCR while breaking it in.

The thing with the MR1 is that they always say its reliable etc, and the accuracy of it is somehow implied. I think its somewhere between all the claims of reliability, the gas system superiority and the price of it ($1800?); makes people believe that it must therefore be accurate. It takes AR mags, but it is far from being anywhere near as accurate as an AR. Shoot enough rounds at a target and it will look like you hit it with a shotgun.

I had my T97 out and shot a bit at 100 yards. With a cheap cheap scope and norinco ammo on a little bag up front I was getting 3-4" groups.

I'm not the best shot but for what it is in the circumstances Id say it's representitive

I've fondled both a few times and shot a T97

The T97 has 2 things that bother me, well 3 really, but one is fixable with some $$

1) it puts a huge dent in the brass, which means the cases are iffy at best or just not able to be reloaded. This is a show stopper for me since I reload - a lot!

2) After seeing the take down vids, it seems to have an awful lot of internal parts, which just makes me think about little tings breaking IMHO

3) You need to hack the handle off and put on the FTU to be able to mount any kind of optic - again this just costs money, but geez, you'd think Norc would make a flat top version already...

The MR1 I kinds liked it some when fondling, but the charging handle and bolt release really turned me off.

Accuracy seems to vary among models.... Spent half a year working behind the gun counter at Bass Pro, everyone I talked too who owned MR1's were consistently getting 1"-2.5" groups @100 with factory ammo, the ergonomics of the MR1 are bad from my experience.

Ive yet to see a video of an XCR ( a 2000+ dollar gun) getting better groups than my SKS rifle... let along function right... XCR's are SUPER comfy to handle though, very light.

A buddy of mine just bought a T97 with a flat top receiver and 7x scope, it seems to shoot around 2-3" @ 100, THE TRIGGER IS GOD AWFUL!! , VERY comfy to shoulder, easy to disassemble, cycles reliably except if your not careful about how you pop in the mag and charge it; youll get these horrible double chambers and cartridges falling out of the receiver and getting wedged in the body of the gun.

Moral of the story, if u have around a $1000 budget and want a semi .223, id get the T97 ONLY if you want a bullpup. id get the MR1 if you really want to drop $1800 on a .223......... and Id recommend a .223 Vz58 with a mag well adapter to fit AR mags.

I love the look of the VZ58, but i hear it lacks accuracy. Right now I can get the t97 for 850 vs 1050 for the VZ.

Why do people love to shet on the MR1? It is one of the nicest shooting .223 semi's out. Handle one and look at the fit of the parts. Dry fire it if they let you in the store, it's probably the best stock trigger on a semi auto rifle. It surely is reliable, and accuracy is good too; mine likes 55gr factory ammo. I can also tell you that 5.56 works great.

The magazine release buttons are too far to reach from the pistol grip, but as a tradeoff the bolt catch is right on the front of the trigger guard so handling isn't too weird. It's not trying to be an AR15. Also, a lot of people think it's ugly, so I guess it's not a good gun haha

because we purchased, fired, worked up loads.. and couldn't get it to group worth being a 150 yard coyote rifle and expected to be able to hit a jug of water at 150 yards and couldn't?
when you pull the trigger on the gun, you should be able to call your shots. I could aim at a softball at 100yards and only hit it every few shots.
the accuracy of the MR1 is outmatched by a mini14 at half the cost.
I will totally, 100% agree with you on the trigger. nicest trigger ever. But who gives a rip if you have a nice trigger and cant shoot a group?

enjoy your gun. I sure enjoyed selling mine!

I'm sure it's not "black" enough, but for the money I don't think you'll find a more accurate .223 semi than the Ruger Mini14 Target model. Mine is MOA with a few ammo choices, and 1.5 MOA with lots of different stuff. Easily scoped, decent trigger, stone-axe reliability. Apparently the standard Mini14 models are now almost as accurate, although I have very little experience with the latest generation, but the Target model makes a great coyote gun within the limitations of the cartridge. My main gripes with it would be weight (a bit too heavy with the laminated stock) and the lack of iron sights. "Operators" will no doubt find fault with magazines limited to 5 rounds and the fact that it doesn't handle exactly like an AR. Oh, well...
