Umm, neither answer is completely correct:
I have to disagree with the idea that this is a "sniper" rifle. The Iraqis have true (Russian & Chinese) SVDs ect in service.
It is rather what we are now calling a "designated marksmans rifle" ala M-14/C7CT (as opposed to an M-21 or C3a1 ect.).
It is chambered in 7.62x39mm.
It is an RPK varient, with a modified SVD type trigger group. (The Iraqis apparently had Zastava set up their AK plant).
It is not related to the Romanian Romak/PSL/FPK.
There was an article in the Small Arms Review about a year ago.
