I've decided to start doing some upgrades to my tac-14, and I'm trying to narrow down which handguard I would like to go with. It's either the Surefire dsf-870 or the Strike Industries VOA. Anyone happen to have opinions on either?

Reviews of the VOA seem pretty good, but there aren't that many. It's aggressive looking, and grip wise, and has a bit to offer, like being lightweight, m-lok slots etc...

The DSF looks to be solid AF, and so it should be, it's a Surefire. But it's also quite heavy for what it is, and doesn't look like it offers a whole lot in the way of grip, certainly not in comparison of the VOA. It would also be ~3x the cost of the VOA.

Anyone have any opinions on either options? Maybe something else I should be considering?

Any feedback is much appreciated!

Go with whichever is the longer forend, the longer it is the farther forward you can push the gun forward with your forward hand.

Hmm... Well that would definitely be the VOA, it's ~8". The DSF has been noted in some reviews I've read as being a little short.
Thanks, I haven't given that aspect much thought yet.

If you’re only shooting it from the hip it doesn’t really matter, if you shoot it like in Brobee’s video the longer forend allows you to comfortably grip and push with the support hand and create more space between your face and the end of the birds head grip. Which is nice when you want to shoot full power loads, once you get used to it the tac14 is pretty easy to comfortably shoot.

Maybe you want to watch this video ..... from my experience with my Tac-14, I can confirm .... Brobee223 is absolutely right ... a longer forend makes a huge difference ....

Thanks for sharing, great video. I’m planning on adding a pistol grip folding stock to it, but the longer handguard still makes.

I have synthetic "corn cob" fore ends on my 12ga & 20ga Rem Tac 14's to eliminate the issue posted below-

extended fore ends will catch gloves &/or the heel of the hand to bind up or pinch the hand.

I do not have the OEM Rem extended fore ends on any of my 870's,1100's,1187's either to eliminate the above issue.

Have yet to experience that, the only time an extended forend has got in the way has been when unloading the mag tube without fully cycling the action. It partially covers the bottom loading port, other than that I don’t find them any different than the short ones. Longer ones might get in the way of a receiver mounted sidesaddle.
