I was looking at the overkill thread in the pics forum and couldn't help but notice that in early 20 years of owning and shooting ARs and more recently using just about every Freddy Go Fast accessory, my current setup resembles my first Abu-Dhabi carbine. Funny when you actually shoot and use your gun in a dynamic arena (for me it is tac-rifle, service rifle and carbine courses:YMMV) I have returned to a nearly total stock system. Gone are the float tubes, flipup sights, two stage triggers, fancy stocks etc. My current set up has only a LMT/Crane stock for an accesory and a non FF Kac Rail and a totally worn out barrel. Lessons I have learned are:

1.Eugene Stoner was a genius...stop finger banging with his work.
Use stock front sights, they won't let you down in a pinch.
Aftermarket triggers are nice for competition, they will let go and stop resetting when you need it most...except KAC...Reed is a genius too.
Jobber flashiders break...no biggie but it happens.
Jobber mags suck...USGI or eqivalent.
Things with batteries will run out when you need them most.(Follow the pics when installing them too)
"Enhanced" products only enhance peoples bank accounts. See no.1
Parts guns don't suck, parts guns using the cheapest possible parts assembled using your living room floor and phone books suck.
There's way more but you get the picture. I have a huge list of stuff that has not worked out, I think this is just as important for civvies as it is for the Mil and LE guys, remember if you need your gear in extremis it will be a one man show with your family in tow, there will be no cover, support or CQ, your #### just has to work.
Less Gucci kit...more IVI.

The thing is, a lot of that fancy crap is actually designed for Military/LE use. You don't need an M203, flip-up ghost sites, a flashlight, laser, and all that other junk for civillian competition (sometimes you may but you wouldn't need all of them).

I kept my 2 AR builds K.I.S.S.

I only went with a RAS on the Colt 9mm becuase of the 8" barrel and NO FSB cutout for the pins. Also That I went with the A1 upper becuase its basic. I mean who needs a fully adjustable rear sight for that under 100m Shooting.

My 223 Its got a RAS, Vertical Grip, Rail Covers, Mag Pul Stock and a Miad grip. Also A cut down carrying handle rear sight and a front flip up. I hatted seeing my FS in my optics.

I plan to use the 223 for service rifle.

I'm glad it didn't take me thousands of dollars to come to this conclusion...I love my simple, unfettered AR's...thank you Sparrow!!! Wanna buy a Sig?:p ;)

Even with my basic AR15 in 223 that was ~3K and my Colt 9mm was ~1800

Give me a light, , a daytime optic, a IR Laser, a vert grip, and thus some sort of rail and I am happy. :) Ideally suppressed and one nam in the det with a Grenade Launcher -

KISS is good - but I still would demand a Light and CCO for a WEAPON.

I dont do the firearm thing ;)

Kevin, CCO is an Aimpoint with 3 minute dot on a KAC straightup mount, light is a Surefire Scout with both LED and Incandescent bulbs, rail is a KAC RIS and as mentioned I did use an LMT/Crane stock, I also hung on to the PRI GasBuster CH, and Magpul winter trigger guard, the list of stuff I binned is huge, many have their place on race guns and match guns but not on my M4-SD (Soccer Dad);) . I would give a left nut for a KAC QD Flash hider though.

I have never bought any magpul stuff myself because the cost outweights any benefit. the only stupid thing that I bought is the crane stock......it is very nice but having 200 USD in my pocket, IMHO, is much nicer.

As I recall you were the first one to jump on the Crane bandwagon, you got one in the white while still in proto stage if memory serves me, the stock is one of the few things I really thought was worth the money, way more comfy and it gave a tad more heel to toe distance, I also liked the 90 deg. angle, don't care for the looks though and I've never really used the battery compartments. Almost forgot, I fit the gun with an AO Big Dot front Tritium sight too.

+1

GL as assigned, but rail, light and optic for me are a necessity. IR definitely for NV. Don't forget a good sling...

Speaking of slings, what do you guys use?, I like the stability if a 3 point but hate the way it gets all hung up, I've been using a slingle point Spectre and like it, I wish I had used it for Fighting Rifle instead of my 3 point. Of the 3 points the SA-80 sling is the one I like most, once you cut off all the excess material. GT, 10-4 on the price, I was lucky I got a good deal on the stock only from a board member.

Ray - Blue Force Gears SOC-C sling -- does 1-2-3 pt depending on what you want. Stocked by FARMBOY

I've used the SOC-C on C8's, M4's, AK's, AKSU-74's and VZ-58's.

I am switching to single point as 3-points is very hard to use with plate carrier. I am waiting for the 360 Ready Set from TacticalLink, will let you guys know how that goes.

I have NEVER actually shot at a human bean with an AR 15, therefor my opinions should be taken with a BIIIG pinch of salt ...
However ...
While sitting around the mall in my cammo, I do read a lot!
[;{)

AND,
Once upon a time I was trained [as an Infantry Officer ] in the "tactical" use of firearms by our esteemed Canuck Reamed Farces.

AND,
I too have competed successfully in practical rifle competitions with an AR 10, loaded down to 7.62 Russian ballistics, and also have competed against those wily bowling pins, with that same AR 10 using 150 Gr .308 Win SP ammo.

I agree with many of Sparrow's opinions ... primarily that Eugene Stoner WAS a genius, and KISS is better than Murphy any day.

If there is a better FULL POWERED BATTLE rifle than an AR 10, I have not found it in nearly 25 years of looking. Stopwatches and fast repeat shots against multiple targets are where the ergonomics of the AR rifles really demonstrate their superiority.

However, I have never been a fan of the 5.56 NATO "Poodle Shooter" ammunition used by the AR 10's little brother, the AR 15. One could argue this point back and forth forever, but to my mind with the 5.56, one must plan on double or triple taps for realistic stopping power, and the time it takes to engage with these multiple rounds may outweigh the speed gained by the ergonomic advantages of the AR 15 platform.

For me, the perfect CQB weapon would be a short barreled AR 10 loaded down to 7.62 Russian ballistics, OR, an AR 15 rifle shooting .30 RUSSIAN ammo. Since the AR 15 platform is NOT reliable in 7.62 Russian without MAJOR design changes to the AR system [ primarily magazines that will RELIABLY feed the tapered .30 Russian ammo ], what I have done is switch my AR 15 rifles over to 16" barreled .300 Whisper. Theoretically, this results in 125 gr bullets at .30 Russian equivalency, and 240 Gr bullets at better than any pistol caliber AR conversion known. Both of them accurate enough for any practical usage at any practical ranges.

SO, my personal choice is now a FLAT TOP 16" AR 15 tricked out in .300 Whisper. The main modifications are an Eotech sight [ fastest thing I've ever tried ] and a FIXED rear stock, either an ACE or a Yankee Hill. I do have a RAS 4 rail system, mostly for the vertical front hand grip [ try them before you dismiss them as frivolous ] and a mount for the 9 V Wolfeyes flashlight.

I DO have an extra top end in 5.56 and a big bag of TACTICAL .223 ammo for it, in case I need to thread the eye of a nedle at 400 yds. But for most sensible usage, I am committed to .300 Whisper ... it just makes more sense for me.

OK FINE???
