Can't believe this crazy thread... 
Anyway... Slowbalt, for your CO job, put a 18.5" barrel on your rem870 and feed it with rifled slugs. Don't need a rifled barrel. a plain barrel is fine. That's all you need. Believe me, no animal can survive a well placed 12gauge slug at 10yd. Plus, there's tons of "tacticool" accessories for the 870 shotgun.
For non-restricted military rifles, just read the threads in this forum, buy one and have fun.

Do it up how you want (sights,stocks etc), loaded with slugs will drop any deer, bear or other critter out to 100 yards or more and with buckshot can safely dispatch an injured deer at 5 or 10 yards.

How about an M38 in 6.5mm Sweede.
Milsurp rifle with strong military heritage.

Flat shooting and cheap ammo
Heavy enough rifle to absorb recoil and let you become an accurate shooter

Another non-Tacticool gun but One of my favorite, the good Old Winchester model 94 in 30-30. With the side mount to allow you to youse the open sight, It's a beauty to shoot. I just fired it often but I loved the handling of that baby!
Simple answer, if you want a military rifle that you will like for it's "history" and for it's "Coolness" and want something that can be used for hunting just about anything, buy yourself a Garand or an Norinco M14(M305).
7.62X51(.308) or 30-06 can be used to take down anything you will find in Canada. (Granted you might want a bigger punch if you run into a large grizzly, but hey, if you can't stop it with 8 rounds of 30-06 or 5 308, just use your 6 3" slugs in your Mossberg 590A1 stapped to your back.
As far as being "professional" or "mature", these are good traits, but in my opinion, if people take themselves and their jobs too seriously they go from being good or exceptional to being grade A pricks.
Life is too short to be around assh**es that think the world hinges on everything they do or say. Yeah, there are times to be serious but as long as you have a good head on your shoulders you should be able to tell when those times are, and if you want to have some fun by showing up with some gear that might make a few "stick up the butt" people pissed off, there is nothing wrong with that as long as you get the job done.

well I take it your cool gun doesn't have to be unrestricted - right? You can always get your ATC. How about those little things in .45 ACP or .40 S&W? At point blank it will take anything and very high on my coolness factor list. Light and short too. Oh and did I mention its way cheaper than most black rifles. And look very black and cool.

well I take it your cool gun doesn't have to be unrestricted - right? You can always get your ATC. How about those little things in .45 ACP or .40 S&W? Hmmm... that thing really looks sweet, but no possibility of ATC, so won't fit the bill. Still it'd be nice to get one once I buy my glock.
Still in the market for a new toy... Thinking more and more of packing my 870, but a reason to buy one more gun can't be missed. ( I am getting to the point where I must give myself a reason for new guns, as more and more of the funds are going toward guns and ammo. ) Going to study for two years right next to a 600m range ( 100m right now ), so an LTR is becoming very interesting, as is any long range rifle. Thing is : I am far from being an olympic athlet ( working very hard on fitness right now ) so 15 pounds guns aren't very appealing , and I am somehow not very "recoil-friendly" so that limits me quite a bit. No idea if being more fit will help me handle recoil better, but in the meantime, I prefer small calibers.
Well I skipped about 8 pages in there but My vote would be for a mini30, its not really accurate but more then enough for everything out to 100yards. Uses the same basic action as those 'ol garands too.
Those are two conflicting things - recoil and weight of your gun. I do not know anybody who would enjoy the recoil and light guns are most horrible in that regard. Ask anybody who owns Mossy Mavericks 12Ga shotguns - you wouldn't want to shoot those all day. Heavier guns do not punch your shoulder as bad and generally are more accurate.

A pistol caliber for dropping a bear or even a large deer is, well, beyond stupid. Use the proper tool for the job, like your 12 guage. If you ever come face to face with a bear with a pistol GOOD LUCK ! Buy a .50AE or a .460 SW and you should be ok.

Get a Ruger .44 Carbine, and bolt all the 10/22 tacticool crap you want to it. Most 10/22 stuff will fit, some just needs a little modification.
.44 mag is plenty for deer/black bear, and will do the job in grizz situations if it has to.
