Taking elk with 30-30?

IMHO, there is absolutely nothing wrong with hunting withh the 30/30, as long as one knows the limitations involved.

Many people up here kill buffalo and moose every year with the 30/30, and do it with one shot.
Hit properly and you will kill cleanly, hit 'em bad, and it doesn't matteer if you are shooting a 375H&H, he's gonna run away wounded!

Took a nice bull moose last year with my 30-30.
Spine shot from 85 yards. Missed the spine, crossed the lungs and lodged in the offside shoulder. Estimated 17" penetration. One shot kill, boom splat.
170 grain Hornady Interlock. Loaded to 1 grain below max, with H4895 if I remember correctly.
I have a pic if you need it. I've posted it here before

I only have a second hand story.

This now-elderly woman I know used to hunt with her husband and 30-some-odd years ago when she was in her 50s she went out with her new Marlin 30-30, Mr. moose appeared in front of her and Grace dropped him.

The 30-30 has killed millions of moose, bears, elk in the hundred plus years of its existence. it's just not a fashionable cartridge these days but still kills as well as it ever did.

30.30 and Large Game

I think this post is a little late. Our grandfathers had nothing else but 44.40s, 30.30s and other such cartriges for large game. They just did it at shorter ranges.:)

Worked then, still works today.
I took a nice doe with my 44-40 at the fantastic range of 60 feet this year.

I know a guy that shot a moose with a .30-30,took him four shots to put it down.He was using iron sights and shooting offhand @ 100 yards so it's safe to say that not all of the shots were in the kitchen.
I think most guys here wouldn't choose a .30-30 for moose as thier first choice.

30-30 for elk

Think back 100 years.....hmmm, do I use my 30-30 to shoot this elk or do I go hungry this winter????
This post is in no way trying to offend those of us who choose the spear as a primary hunting tool.:D

Johnny, post the pics.... you know we like them.....
Well, here's one that was shot with a carbine that isn't much higher velocity than the 30/30.
I think it is around 2,100 - 2,200 PFS because of the 20" barrel.
175 grain bullet, 97 paces.:D

Judging by them big ears looks like a good sized jackrabbit! LOL!! No offence ment!
I'm sure the 30/30 has what it takes but why bother if it's not a survival situation. There are lots of other more suitable cartridges for the larger grass burnin clovin hoofed critters. Deer yes but Elk NO! Just my two cents worth.

OMG! just reread the part that says the rifle has a 20" tube. In comparison with the critters body, it must be a Jackrabbit afterall LOL !!!!!!
HEY!!:runaway: That's a hellava BIG jackrabbit, Pal! :D
It is actually a fair sized doe, it's the angle that gives it away.
It was big enough that I couldn't put it in the truck with some riggin' of rope and repositioning.

I have a trapper buddy up here who has alwways maintained that
"anything more than a 30/30 is a waste of meat"!

It's not WHAT you have to hunt with , but what a person PREFERS to hunt with, IMHO.

I have a few really big rifles, but like the smaller fellas, unless I want to shoot BPCR, then I tote the big guys.

Many people have never really figured thhay needed any more thhan a 30/30 and that's fine, as long as they know it's linitations, like I stated earlier.
