Talking my girlfriend out of a Mossberg and into an 870 . . .

wow yeah, i'd go with what brobee said.

not only was it extremely well written and very entertaining to read, the man speaks the truth!

Young man, you have a lot to learn. Not about guns, but about women.

Lesson one. She is right, you are wrong. It does not matter if you have facts and truth on your side. You are wrong and cannot be right.

Lesson two. Learn the Mantra. "Yes dear. You were right. I was wrong. I am sorry."

BTW, the Mossberg is based on the Remington 31, arguably the best Remington ever made. The 870 was introduced to replace the Rem 31 because it was cheaper to make - not a better gun. She obviously knows this and assumes you do, too.

Google is your friend.

For the win.

My first shotgun was a Mossberg 500 12ga, and it had extraction issues. My second shotgun is a Remington 870 which had a feed issue after I incorrectly reassembled the action, but otherwise none. I still have the Remington.

I have to agree with the general consensus that the Mossberg 500 is the better shotgun than the current production 870's. BUT I will say that comparing the fit and finish on the mariner versions of both of these models, the 870 is the clear winner.
Regardless, be prepared to put whatever she chooses up on the EE in a few months...my 870 Mariner came to me via a CGNer whose wife wanted it because it was "shiny"...she fired half a box and then it sat in his safe till he traded it to me :D

I wanted a Marine Magnum since I was a little kid, I fulfilled my dream and bought a brand new one 2 years ago, the extractor was messed up right out of the box and it jammed 2/3 times. Once that was fixed the nickel started flaking off the bolt and inside the receiver after about 200 rounds. That POS went back and I doubt I'll ever buy another Remington.

I hear the Mossbergs are actually really nice though!

Just watch: she'll decide to pay for it out of her savings and just buy a Benelli M4 *eyeroll*

Now that, would be a fine decision! I liked my 870, really liked my 590's but true shotgun love came when I got my first Benelli.

(edit: just don't let her get that gawd awful cat puke desert tan one = deal breaker..)

from the "You're missing the point" file: most of our wives and girlfriends don't want much to do with guns.

Having a girlfriend who had an interest in shotguns would be awesome. Any shotgun.
Having my wife never find out about her would be awesomester.

A properly built 500 ( with metal trigger ) is as good as any
