I was just wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for getting hides tanned with the fur on,were do i go?who does good work?and what the average price to pay would be for beaver/deer/black bear?this is just for the hide hon't need heads or anything done.

talk to fred thompson in coaldale ab he is the best taxidermast around in my opinion
I have hides that i just fleshed and stretch and dried hung on my wall
the diffrence between dried and tanned is the tanned is way softer and pliable

Halford Hide in Edmonton could probably do it for cheaper than a regular taxidermist, though I'd be a little worried about getting back the same animal I brought in.

Tanning

I called a taxidermist in Coaldale to see how much to have an elk hide tanned, hair on; nothing special. The guy charged by the square foot, can't remember the rate, but the total was over $850!!!!

I laughed and hung up. I ended up salting the hide then letting it dry (which did not take very long in SW AB. Later I talked to DW and he sent me a link for a place up in North Central BC, good prices, I think it was something like $200 for an elk hide. I will eventually send it up there. PM Dave, he is out moose hunting right now, but he should be back soon.

Good luck,

Ian

there is also a place in vernon bc thats supposed to do a good job you just need an export permit
i heard there was a place in edmonton (not sure the name) that teh quality varied some good and some bad
as for the guy in coaldale if it was fred he is expensive but your animal will look exactly like its still alive

Dan, do the hutterites down in your neck of the woods not tan hides anymore?
I had them do an elk hide into leather, which I made into a set of chaps, about 10 yrs back.
They did an excellent job and it only cost $80.
Not sure if they did hair-on at that time, but I don't know why not.

That would probably be Chilcotin Fur Tannery in Williams Lake.

Jason is a good guy who does very nice work.

That was it! As for the guy in Coaldale, I did not want it to look like it was still alive, I wanted it to look dead as a hide on the floor should look! I explained to the guy I wasn't looking for a rug mount (I'd keep stubbing my toes and banging my knees on the antlers) I just wanted it tanned - did not even have to be soft!

First deer hide I wanted done with the hair on I took to a taxidermist around Red Deer. That mistake cost me an extra $125 for his "services" (shipping and handling really, although he 'trimmed' the hide - something I had specifically asked him not to do...).

I sent a bear skin to Edmonton Fur Tanners Ltd. in 2004 and was quite happy. I paid $30 per lineal foot and they would have skinned the lips, ears, nose, and paws for $50 more. What I got back was a soft tanned hide with hair on, just like the taxidermists get hides back from the tannery.

They are in the yellow pages, along with several others in Edmonton that do the same sort of thing - just phone around ahead of time.

I sent this site to my brother-in-law and he was able to do it himself. He just followed the instructions and the hides turned out great. Lots of other interesting stuff as well.

try raily colony there inbetween lethbridge and cardston they did tan hides not sure about leaving the hair on though but worth a try

I tried them just last year, the had let their permit expire due to enviromental concerns. They said they might get it renewed but that it was costly. One of the good things that I hear about the colony is that you get your own hide back as well.

FWIW, I just sent my Black Wolf off to Halford's in Edmonton. They quoted me $175 as compared to other prices being anywhere from $250 to $600!

I hope to be able to make a good report on their work, but they said it may be a year before I get it back.

They also have a pile of home tanning products that may be worth a try.
I kept a small patch of moose hide to do just that and will report back when it's done.

I do it myself with great kits available here:http://freespace.virgin.net/sts.northwales/intro.htm
very easy to use and I have a good selection, you can brain tan but I think that loses the fur. I get about 4 large deer hides from a £25 kit and with a few bags of salt its all just time after that! I do treat after tanning with Supa soft oil as this makes a real difference!

I have used Halford Hide in Edmonton for several tanning jobs. I have always been happy with the work they did. I had my antelope hide done last year for a wall hanger and it turned out great. They also told me it would be 6-12 months but I had it back in about 6 weeks. I know for a fact that I have always gotten my own stuff back as well.
