Tapco SKS Mag

The tapco work great and will last a long time. The metal ones can be prone to bent feed lips and may not feed well after long term use or even short term rough use. THis is personal experience not just guess work. I would stay with Tapco's.

My long term fix for this was to buy an unfired SKS-D and I use the AK mags and have never looked back.

yeah if i was getting them for 20 bucks instead of 48 i'd definitely go plastic as well. but with the pricing being much closer i may just go for the metal

It's your money and now that prices are down it's your call. However for my money I'd rather have twice the amount of mags or more money in my pocket. If you're rough on equipment than the metal ones will save you money if you don't get teh lips bent outa shape, but the plastic ones ARE very durable and for hunting or range plinking they would probably last just about forever. 3gun matches tend to be a little harder on all mags, but I still think the plastic ones would work well.

lol you posted while i was typing! :p

I have a buddy that has an import licence and he got the mags for me for half of what they are sellign for up here. Trust me when I say wearing out on of these old eastern bloc mags would be very very difficult.

400 rounds in a year? that's it! I had my sks for less than 6 months and had close to 3000 rounds through it! You need to get to the range more!

 3000 in 6 months would be 6000 a year. You're probably right,I should see the range more often with the SKS,but if I count all the spend ammo of my other toys that share range time with the SKS,I'd still be "only" 2000 a year.
The message above your avatar states "I have no life" Um,...hard to belive, reading this.;)

If only I could....:(

Yeah I got an ATI stock for it, a green laser NC star scope forpard grip bipod.... damn that thing was ugly and useless AND i shot so many rounds out of it trying to figure out why my buddy's gun shot a 4ish or so inch group at 100 yards and mine could barely hit paper even before i raped it's innocense with the chinese crap hanging off of it. I got fed up with it and sold it to my buddy who then pawned it off on his brother who now uses it as a lever for his tirejack....

Ammo...mine is a blackbolt laminate russian,a beater.I had bullet holes all over the place at a hundred yards and couldn't figure out whats wrong.Last try...maybe it is not the gun,so I checked my czech ammo and wow: I threw them in my reloading scale just to find out, Bullets: equal,Case w primer, also equal.Powder load differences up to 7.7 grain, duh. Then I started taking the weight of every single rund, put the most equal ones back into the clip (around 60%) and all of a sudden my ugly boomstick did 3" groups at a hundred instead of the 2' before. Kept the other 40% for guests and plinking:D

The mags themselves aren't prohib in canada, just the rifle. It's not overly difficult to find the AK mags. A buddy has an sks-d next time i see him I can ask where he got his if you like.

sounds like that may have been the way to go but i like the fact that it was made in russia not china.. ah well now that i have it i think i'll just get one of the mags built for it and just run that and then leave it alone

Didn't try that, but I did try faxtory non corossive ammo and still no dice. a different buddy had some handloads that shoot about 2 inch groups for his mini-30 and had no effect in my sks.

AFAIK they are not bringing in any SKS-D's so the rifle itself can be harder to find than the mags. When they do pop up from time to time on the EE the price tends to reflect their "rareity".

Stick with what ya got and have fun! They're the cooey 64 of centerfire rifles!

plastic ones are garbage..... you will break it.....

Tapco SKS mags are really strong !!!
I had to file just a little bit of wood to make it fit... It was too tight.
It took me about 5 mins to make it fit :p
I own two 5/20 Tapco mags and it works just fine...

- look badass on a SKS !!!
- *cheap* price
- you can use stripper clips
- the bolt stay open when the last round is fired like OEM
- works perfectly
- its not made in China...

Well said. The six statements above are true...

Just wanted to point out a problem, and fix with two 5/20's I just bought.

Both had some small burrs on either side of the upper casing, which were stopping the follower about an 8th of an inch from the top, after the last round. The fact that it was initially a super tight fit into the magwell, was also adding to the problem.

This caused the bolt-stop to rest just shy of the catch, and therefore not allowing the bolt to lock open on the last round.....which is a major pain when the bolt must be open in order to remove the mag!

...Anyways, it made for a bit of a frustrating day at the range, but after sanding down the burrs, and a little off the wood, to loosen up the fit a wee bit, they seem to work fine and dandy. Bolt now locks open every time.

We also had another issue, where the 1st round (when loaded with 5) didn't seem to want to chamber, and when it did chamber, the trigger wouldn't pull - as though the safety were on. Seemed to function fine with 4 rounds though, aside from the bolt lock issue.

Not sure what the problem was there, but I'm hoping both the Mags, and the Gun, just need to be broken in some.

Anyone experience either of these malfunctions with Tapco 5/20's?

could be that the bolt isn't closing all the way. give it a hard shove forward and then you can pull the trigger. may be a case of the mag being pinned a bit too tight and the round is retarding the bolts movement. is the 5th round hard to fit in the mag?
