Hey out there. I am new to shooting and hunting this year. I was told by a buddy that he puts tape on the end of the barrel when hunting so nothing get down it. He says that it is not dangerous and does not affect the accuracy of the bullet. Is this the case? I'm a little nervous to place anything on the end of the barrel of my gun. Let me know if any of you guys do this and what your experiences are with it. Thanks

As long as the tape is on the outside of the barrel, there is no safety concern. The trapped air will remove the tape before the bullet gets there.

I've hunted in some of the wettest and nastiest areas in BC and have always taped barrels. At first I was a bit concerned about how the tape would affect bullet performance, so I hit the range and shot several rounds with tape - no change in POI. It's a cheap way to have peace of mind.

I do the same and have done so for many years, find the white bandage tape or camo tape to stick better to a cold barrel better than electrical tape, hunt in the mountains all the time in severe weather and works great to keep the barrel clean and dry. One layer only, shoot right through the tape come shooting time.

good god, there's electrical tape, duct tape, scotch tape, and hockey (blade) tape, hockey (sock) tape, not to mention double sided carpet tape, surveyors tape, tuck tape, stitch tape..... choices choices!

since its in the shotgun forum.... Does anyone tape a shotgun barrel...i can imagine a late season duck hunt in snow/rain, could lead to water/ice down the barrel.

also a 12ga barrel has a much bigger opening than a 25-30cal rifle to get stuff in

I've used a strip of masking tape overthe end of my shotgun plenty of times. Keeps all the snow, bedris, etc.. out of the barrel when pushing dense brush in search of critters.

All I've ever used is 3M black electricians tape, and it works great. I use three pieces of tape, two to make an X over the barrel and one around the barrel to secure the two. It works even on a cold barrel, just make sure the tape is warm.
I left the tape on all fall and winter once (no venison that year) and found it starting to tarnish the bluing after I removed it in the spring, so don't leave it on too long.

No, just tip the barrel down to let all the water out.
