taping up your muzzle while hunting?

I never bothered until I got back to camp one time, ejected the round in the chamber, then saw a 6” twig slide back into the action from the chamber. In order to hav not fallen out the muzzle, it must have been wedged between the poured bullet and the chamber wall. Could have been bad. Now I always tape it up.

I use electrical tape or a foam ear plug... Have shot many down range at a 300 yard gong on my way home from hunting as I pass the local shooting range... Every bullet so far has hit the steel...

Don't use an ear plug! They collect moisture and freeze. My buddy put a nice bulge in his 280 and had to replace the barrel.

I have been taping the muzzles of my rifles for many decades now.
I used to use Black electrical tape, but now I prefer the brightly
colored tape. [yellow or red.] Regardless of color, it is harmless and
keeps unwanted debris and moisture out of the barrel.
I would NOT use a foam ear plug, since anything inside the barrel
can bulge it, even lightly packed snow. Dave.

Good idea on the color... let's you see it's there quickly.

I seem to recall this being taught on the Alberta Hunting Course way back well I won't say the date. As I recall it was to prevent ice from forming or obstructions in the barrel. It wasn't supposed to affect accuracy because the gases from the round were supposed to push the tape off. I never have done it but I like to live on the edge...

I tape the muzzle on my rifle, it prevents snow and debris from entering the barrel and also prevents the thread protector for my muzzle break from coming loose. A friend of mine noticed some snow in the muzzle of his 270 weatherby and went to blow it off quickly and got his tongue stuck on the end off a frozen barrel. He lost the skin off the end of his tongue. Taping your barrel is a good idea. lol

I have always been a little concerned about debris dripping down my barrel on the walk to my stand, I usually just tip the downwards once i’m In there, never really occurred to me to cover it with tape lol.
