Tara Group TM-9 Range Report

Had a chance to take my new Tara TM-9 out to the range. Overall I am not unhappy with it.

I put 400rnds down range and it groups nicely once you get used to the heavy trigger. It does help very much to ease back the trigger after a shot till the trigger resets and you do get a much lighter trigger as reported.
I did have the issue that some other have reported of the trigger not resetting itself on an empty mag. Once you accept this as the way this pistol works it really is a non-issue at least for me. I did not find that it inhibited operation of the firearm in any way with a full mag. If you have an issue with the trigger not resetting, put in a full mag drop the slide and you will find the trigger has reset properly. Just a weird thing with this gun. I would be concerned except it is a sub $300 gun and seems to work fine when it counts.

All in all it is a fun gun to shoot. It is not a Glock so get that right out of your mind set. A Glock is probably superior in most ways then the Tara. The Tara however is a fun gun for very little $$$ to be honest I never expected a 9mm for this kind of money but I did have fun at the range and for the 400rnds shot of Remington UMC 9mm I had one light strike that fired on the second pull of the trigger but no other failures.

If there are any questions from anyone I would be happy to answer them if I can. I am not a gun pro, just a regular shooter out for fun not really keeping score. I did spend 18 years in the service with a tour in Afghanistan so I am not unfamiliar with firearms but by no means an expert, full disclosure ;-) What is a great gun for me may be garbage to someone else and that is okay, I am good with that.

I also have one and agree with your comments. For my first few range trips I didn't know about the "double action" vs "single action" trigger pull so I shot a few hundred rounds "double action". After watching a bunch of youtube videos I clued in and now shoot "single action". Much nicer.

Accuracy for me is fine at 7-10 yards. I need to move the sight to the right as I consistent hit left (I'm sure it's me). I have issues hitting paper at 25 yards, but I am not a good shot so again sure it's me.

My biggest beef is the pinning of the magazines. A few of my magazines are 10 rounds, a few are 9 rounds (I have 5 total). Frustrating, since I want to at least try this gun for 3-gun competition once the zombie apocalypse is over.

Bought a holster for it (Glock 17 holster). Works great for me!

Boys i am thinking of ordering one today. Would i be disappointed?

To me, it was worth the price. But don't compare a $300 firearm to a $500 or $700 firearm. Easy to take apart, easy to clean. If you are happy with Norinco pistols then I think your expectations are good. When I received mine I took it apart, oiled it well, then worked the slide about 100 times to break it in. Then I shot a few hundred rounds through it.

I would buy it again.... just need to figure out an easy way for all my magazines to hold 10 rounds!

YMMV. Standard disclaimers apply.

How does it compare with the Girsan Mc28 - similar budget 9mm?

Though given you can pick up used Caniks for around $300, that would be the way I'd go.

Haven't shot one but kinda attracted to the raw basic looks of it . Reminds me of 1st generation of glocks or early Grand power pistols.

Haven't got one since i know i have better guns already so probably wouldn't be keeping it.

Never shot that model of Girsan. I have shot it side by side with the Girsan Regard which is the Beretta 92 knockoff. The Girsan is very smooth. The Tara is a fun little gun and I had no issues with shooting 400 rounds through it. All in all I was very happy with it.

This is not a Glock, it just has a passing resemblance too one. There are videos on youtube that show these guns broken down when you see the internal components you will see the looks are the only thing Glock like about it.

Depends on what you are expecting. To be very honest I was not really expecting much for $300 bucks. I love my norks. Not much to look at but always go bang. When I got the Tara I was very surprised at the build quality as it is very good. I may have just got a good one but I would buy another. Very easy to clean and if Justin tries to take it away you are not out big bux.

I got a trigger scale on mine: 9lbs give or take. It's the worst trigger of any pistol I own, even worse than a Tokarev and I didn't find that the pull weight varied if it was a DA pull or a reset SA pull. Fantastic dry fire practice though, a trigger this horrific will easily show poor trigger press technique.
IMO, the Girsan MC28 is better for the money.

I have both.

MC28 is far ahead on everything.

My TM9 slide is kinda loose and rattles.

Not gonna lie, gun feels like crap.

If there weren't guns at the same price with better triggers, sure. But the MC28 and the Norc Sig clones are right around that $300 mark as well and they have much better triggers.

Tara TM 9

Hi all
Would anyone know which Holster and mags are compatible with the Tara TM 9,
everything I've seen it might be the glock17.
Thanks in advance.

I shoot a Tara TM-9 for US competitions as most of my 9mm auto pistols are Norinco. I bought a Glock 17 holster for it. The Tara is a few mm wider, so it is a snug fit. But repeated insertions/removals has made it not too bad.

Glock 17 magazines do not fit mine. I ended up buying a bunch of Tara magazines from a Canadian retailer.

Am I the only one with one of the rubber bullet only TM-9’s? These guns are junk. Take a look and look in the Tara website. BS! https://youtu.be/Z8ZiPVqTymk

While I agree that this is concerning, it appears that the TM-9 has been for sale since 2018 and although I admit I'm not a Google guru, I was not able to find any mention of any Tara pistol "blowing up" or being destroyed. Not sure how many other people are shooting these things frequently (other than me... hmmm...) but maybe it's just luck that the 1000 or so rounds I have put through mine have not given me any problems. All handloads, 115gr Campro projectiles. Used to use Winchester 231, now using Accurate #2.

That being said, maybe it's time for me to retire it, or reduce my use of it. I can also drop my powder charge and make lower pressure rounds.

With the current gun ban/freeze, not like I can replace it on my Form 6 for competition so I have very limited choices if I want to keep shooting in the USA (in Canada I use my Norinco P226 clone).

I have 3 Girsans. They are clones of the S&W MP9 (with a better trigger).

I have 3 Caniks. They are Walther clones. Triggers are excellent, right out of the box.

I would recommend the Canik, if for no other reason that the parts support form Century Arms in Montreal is outstanding. Service from North Sylvia for the Girsan is poor.
