Taurus parts..

Taurus guns really are pretty good: solid quality, good designs and very well finished, they coud do very well in Canada given their price points.
Dealing with the "Service attitude challenged" distributor that they have here is probably costing them 95% of their true potential sales. RNicholls doesn't want the civillian market (in fact it's open to debate if they want ANY market) and won't push Taurus to the LE market, so there's really no point in the two working together. Virtually any other distributor in Canada could do a far better job with Taurus, some could work wonders.

The only Taurus I'd consider is the 1911 for the reasons that IM Lugger already outlined.... you can get parts anywhere. And there are 'smiths that can work on them.

I spoke to them on the same subject. They knew nothing of the problem.

I hope to import Taurus this year, if they can address the issues. No reason not to have a Western distributor. They used to have SIR, but since the takeover, they have dropped.

Actually they have been aprised of the problem every year for at least 6 years. Their claiming ignorance is not really reassuring.

FWIW Northern Tackle is apparently now their Western Distributor.

Sounds about right. I have spoken to them the past 4 years. Same answer. And people wonder why we avoid major gun makers.

Hello Mr *********.

My name is George *********.
I was the person that was talking to you at SHOT regarding the problem Canadian gun owners have getting parts and or service for Taurus handguns. I posted a thread on the most popular firearms website in Canada advising the members I had talked to a factory rep (I didn’t mention your name) just your job title and it has generated some discussion.
The link to it is below.

http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=308367

You have to register to read it. The overwhelming response is pretty much what I told you in Orlando. R Nichols refuses to deal with civilian gun owners regarding parts.

I’ve owned my PT99 for over 15 years and enjoy shooting it very much. However after learning that it is pretty much impossible to get parts or service for Taurus guns in Canada I stopped shooting it.
If it breaks..I’ll have a very fancy paper weight.

The handgun market in Canada will never be as big as it is in the US, however you won’t find a more dedicated group of gun owners. Our handguns have been restricted since 1934 and anyone who gets involved in handgun shooting is usually a competitive shooter of some description. So they are always looking for good prices on quality guns.

It would be great and go along way towards changing the poor reputation of Taurus customer service in Canada if you or another customer service rep would register on CanadianGunNutz and address our concerns in that thread.

We have numerous firearms dealers up here that have stellar reputations in the firearms industry that would do a great job of promoting Taurus handguns in Canada.
2 of them have posted in that thread voicing their experience with Taurus.

I look forward to your reply and it was a pleasure meeting you at SHOT.
Thank you very much for your time.

I have a Taurus .22 revolver and it has some issues with not firing every shot. I think it needs a tune-up and minor repairs before I do much more shooting with it, but it is potentially a great little gun.

Is there a smith that will look at it that knows what he is doing? I bought it used, I like it and am willing to look at investing time and money repairing it, warranty or not. Of course if it can be done for free . . .

All replacement parts are "minor" and "less then $100" (no import/export issues), so I see no reason why they can't do warranty here working from US.

Because without a concractual agreement that spans border issues and inter distributor issues their hands are tied. And rightfully so. It would be commercial chaos if distributors from other countries were able to sell anywhere and bypass the proper domestic distributor. Granted this is a case where the Canadian rep NEEDS to be replaced or bypassed but from an overall aspect the US Taurus folks are right to refuse to sell parts for or repair Canadian guns.

We may see it as just getting our gun fixed but to them it's a case of wondering if they are treading on the toes of our domestic Taurus distributor. The US Taurus folks are quite correct in not dealing with us or even replying to inquiries other than an admonishment to deal with our home grown distributor.

Taurus may be one of the few outfits in the gun world where we suffer from this lack of customer intrest but it's not the only one that has ever killed a product line here in Canada. It has shown up in my other hobbies/sports as well. In one case I remember it killed the product. In another it was fixed when the US distributor finally listened to our pleas and pulled the contract from the distributor. But even then it took a couple of years of fact collecting until the producer had an iron clad set of examples of breaches of contract and could act on it.

In the meantime our best bet is to form a good contact with a shooter in the US who is willing to buy the parts you want and then "sell" them to you and ship up here. That way you can bypass the US distributor restrictions on selling to Canada. PITA? You bet. But it's at least a ready work around.

If the rep that Striker was talking to does log in here, I say..........

I am 35 years old. I own over 40 firearms. If Taurus does not improve its standing with Canadian firearms owners, I will never purchase a product of your manufacture. There are 3 1911 models that I am interested in so far but will not give you the business because you will not look after your product or customer. Taurus needs to expand its market, not shrink it in these tough times.

Before we hang Taurus..keep in mind, they might not realize how big this problem is. The person I was talking to told me they do get orders for parts from their "distributor" up here.
I told him it must be for law enforcement or mil people because they won't even talk to us civies.

I also don't want this thread to fill up with insults towards Taurus. That won't help our case at all. Share your experiences or your opinions but please keep them cordial..

Definetly agree. I know it's frustrating when you've got a gun sitting idle for the lack of parts but being anything other than factual and respectful won't win this the attention it needs.

my buddy has a taurus model 669 that needs a 10 dollar part and has been siting in his safe collecting dust for the last 3 years because he cant get the part that is needed from the dist! poor service to say the least!!

Feel for you folks. The service below the border is superb. Had one of their .45's with feed problems and sent the gun back to them. Among other things, they replaced the entire top end at no charge. (slide and everything in it)

Wonder if Wendy Cukier works for your distributor:eek:
