Tavor ammo review

The Americans have their own goofy laws to work around.
Namely sbr's being taboo without a tax stamp.
Hence the interest in the tavor as it provides a shorter overall length without a tax stamp for a shorter than 16" barrel.

So it's not just the fact tavor is non restricted that is popular in Canada like what many people said.
Some people want tavor because of shorter overall length.

That's the way I see it as well. And as long its accuracy meets Minute of Coyote standards, its a great gun for me.
Just wish they had a conversion kit for 30-30 caliber and I would use it for bush deer hunting as well.

Get a 300 Blackout barrel made for it and swapped in. No other parts needed and it will be plenty for deer within 200yds.

Hey thats a pretty good idea, i didn't think about that, would anything else need to be changed? Like the piston recoil spring? Or is it just a barrel and you're ready to go?

The barrel needs a pistol length gas system but can get by on a carbine length if the gas port is opened up a little. Other than that everything is the same. Bolt and mags both work since the 300BLK parent case is .223.
Handloading is almost a must and it is very particular on powder it will work with in a semi auto. Factory loads are available but not common yet. Last factory stuff I bough was $16/box.

I have a piston driven AR in 300BLK with a 9.75 inch barrel that is doing just a hair over 1 inch at 100yds with my 110gr V-max handloads. I'm getting a 300BLK barrel made for my ACR as well.
LOVE IT. Great cartridge.

How do ya figure? A rack grade AR does about 1.5 MOA. The Tavor does 1.5 MOA. I think it is false snobbery to look down your nose at the IDF as a 'conscript' military as well. They have been kicking the cans of countless volunteer armies and militias for over half a century. They are not pikers - if they were they would have been defeated long ago.

Sorry but so far only Mike's Tavor does 1.5moa and only with one type of ammo. Most other reports from Tavor OWNERS are not so flattering.
Almost all AR's will do 1.5-2 moa with most types of ammo as long as the shooter does his part.
It's great you love your Tavor but you are arguing with nothing to back up your claims. The AR has been around a long time and it's well known what it is capable of. Instead of yapping about how great the Tavor is and how accurate they are why don't you show us some groups from your rifle. Go buy some of the targets with 9 orange crosses on them and make 5 five round groups on the one page. The average group size of the 5 targets is what YOUR Tavor is capable of. Mike's spending a lot of money testing ammo and showing the results. He's done a great job showing that with the right ammo and if you take your time the Tavor can be pretty decent off the bench.
If you're so confident then give it a try. Use any ammo you want but all shots count and no waiting 5 minutes between shots to let everything cool, these are semi auto's and if they can't perform being shot semi auto then what's the point? You may as well buy a bolt action and get 1/2 moa all day long.

Also why would you limit the AR selection to a rack grade milspec rifle? If you're comparing to the Tavor which is $2700 new then why not a $2700 AR? That price puts you up into JP, Noveske, LMT, KAC levels of performance which... well you know what would happen.

Exactly. The only reason the Tavor enjoys the popularity it does in Canada is because of it's non restricted status. It's a decent rifle but you can buy a more capable AR at half the cost.

This, and it's the only reason I've owned one since 08'. Honestly, I get on a VERY good day MOA, but commonly, MOA +. I think for the majority of us, it's the trigger, I'm sorry, but it sucks. Oddly enough, my best friend with his Tavor get's 3/4 @ 100 yards. He's also a better shooter then I 'am, for what that's worth.

This also works great for the Tavor, and ANY rifle on the market for that matter.

It's also cheap.

Let's keep some perspective here. He did that with a combat optic in less than ideal weather conditions. He has not even started to reload. I see all this as very encouraging.

I don't know where I stand on your comment about comparing $2700.00 rifles...to me we need to compare rifles to rifles, not economic apples to economic oranges. Go ahead, spend your $2700.00 on an AR configured for battlefield use, NOT precision shooting - and we'll bag them up and shoot them! I would be interested too!

I dunno boys but for me once the groups go under 1.5 MOA - that is tons of accuracy for anything I gotta do. Accuracy like that? In a handy little package with with superior ergonomics? I call it a win for the Tavor. There is some serious fun to be had with this little gem and I intend to enjoy it to the max!

Oh and a PS - I did post some groups with some old ammo I had brewed up for my AR; it was about -20C, blowing winds and snow - and I averaged 2 MOA and change over 4 groups. I am an experienced shooter that is new to the Tavor and some load development and trigger time will no doubt tighten things up a bit.

I mean no offense CR5 - If you shoot at the SPFGA range let me know - let's go shoot! If I am full of beans who cares - there will be all kinds of good sport to be had in the proving of it.

Your range has gone crazy with it's silly rules the last couple years. You're welcome to come to Genesee with me as my guest though. $20/day for guests. I also don't shoot on weekends as there are just too many GiJoe's out there and I refuse to stand in line for a shooting table then wait 15min while people check their targets and BS each other.
That offer is also open to anyone who wants an afternoon of shooting and to check out the Genesee range. I will also sponsor anyone for membership once I make sure you're not a dipsh!t.

Tell me about it. It is the old stogies that are the worst offenders at the SPFGA, they walk around and scold everyone for the hell of it because if gives some retired old farts something to do. Mind you, the membership has exploded too - and a lot of the newbies can only be described as dipchits. I got in trouble there once for 'shooting a machine gun' - an AR15 that I was shooting slow fire with...and another time because I had a man-shaped target that I had turned around to use as a spotter at 300 yards - the blank side was facing the shooting benches. (I told the old fart screaming about that to sod off and threatened to rat him out to the executive - go do something useful you old toads! Like emptying the garbage cans or something...).

Sheesh. Do you need a sponsor to get a membership at Genessee? I am getting sick of the bullchit at SPFGA too...

Yes, need a sponsor and Genesee is headed the same way as well, No self proclaimed RO's yet but if anyone tried yelling at me they are going to get an earful of F OFF. We are getting swipe cards and camera's as well this year.
I found out this fall they don't allow centerfire rifles on the 25/50yd range which pisses me off. Some days I like putting a red dot on an AR and shooting close range. You're only allowed to sight in then have to move on to the 100yd or the 200/300yd range for centerfire long guns. The reason I was given is that centerfire rifles destroy the dirt hill faster than pistols. What a crock of crap, So my 223 somehow ruins a dirt hill but my 460S&W mag was totally fine? I'm keeping my membership though because we are being told there will be a 700yd range opening this summer and my 338 Lapua really needs a place to play.
I'm looking at other options for when I feel like shooting in a more relaxed environment without travelling. PM me for details.

Well I got out with my Nosler 77 gr. BTHP's brewed up with Varget yesterday and groups ran around three inches with one anomaly that was 1.5". Mind you it was high winds gusting around 50KPH and up so my offhand shooting sucked too. I am going to burn some RE15 with them but I am not hopeful, my black rifles with the 1:7 twists all seemed to prefer the 69 grain pills.

Good practice ammo I guess, and I have a box of a thousand of 'em here so I will just burn them up on that and keep on experimenting I guess. Life is good!

Tavor also doesn't cost $2700 South of the border so it's not such a big deal to give one a shot to see if you like it.

Since you haven't noticed, everything cost more in Canadian compared to the States.
You can get a decent Ar15 for under $1000 in States.
If you want a decent Ar15 in Canada, you have to spend over $1000.

And from what I can see, most Americans love their tavors.

I have noticed and that is exactly my point, it doesn't cost almost $3000 down there so it's a lot easier pill to swallow for a guy that wants to try one out. Of course they like them, it's a nice well built compact rifle.
The Canadian price is why the Tavor is never going to run any other rifle out of the market. There are not that many people here that will spend close to $3000 on a rifle that only gives mediocre accuracy. I don't hunt big game with 223 because it's illegal in my province so the fact that it is non restricted means that if I'm going to own it I want better accuracy because it will get used for varmint and predator hunting. My HK, AR's and ACR all shoot better than the Tavor with a wider variety of ammo (not only one type) so the HK and ACR are better for me to use on rabbits, gophers, coyotes, and wolves.
It's a nice rifle but I won't pay that much for one when there are rifles available for less that will shoot as well or better.
They are nice rifles but are overpriced. I like bullpups and I like the Tavor so I'm not bashing the rifle itself, just saying that there are better options for the money in my opinion. If it was around $2000 I think it would be a fun little rifle to throw in the truck and take out in the bush and out quadding but I just don't see it being worth $2700.

I'm still waiting for someone to rebarrel one with a higher quality barrel and/or in 300 blackout.
