Tavor charging question

Hi all,

I just got a new FDE Tavor from the Durham deal, my first Tavor.

When I rack the charging handle back fast, it works as expected, the trigger/hammer resets and I can fry fire. But when I pull or "walk" the charging handle back slowly, it does not seem to set the hammer/trigger.

Is that normal or expected? Any advice?

Not to insult you but what semi auto firearms have you been taught or read in the instructions to ride the action close? In all semi auto firearms be they rifles, shotguns, or pistols must have the action fully pulled to the rear and released to charge the firearm. The action behaves the same for me on my Tavor if I ride the action. Just don't do it.

When my Tavor was new it would not reset unless I let the charging handle completely slam forward. After it broke in I was able to have it reset with less force.
 
There's a detent the charging handle has to pass when in the most forward position in order to set the hammer. If you ride it home and it doesn't slam forward all the way, the hammer will not be charged.

This guy has the right advice. The CH has a small piece of spring steel on the front to keep the non-reciprocating CH in place during fire or bolt hold open.
 
You can "forward assist" the charging handle into the detent if you ride it home or do a brass check, no issues.

Thanks for your comment, not to insult your reading comprehension skills :) (joking), but nowhere did I mention I "ride it" forward slowly to "close", I was deliberately wording it to refer to pulling it "back slowly".

All my SANs, ARs, CZs would #### the gun and set the trigger even when pulling back slowly when dry firing, hence my question about if the Tavor is different.

That makes sense, I can see it being brand new probably being really tight, I will re-test it and try the forward assist.
With your explanation I expect it will loosen up after a few more cycling.
I did let it slam but it is possible not all the way back from the very rear end, so maybe for the first few dozen times it need a bit more slamming force.

I was told I had to pull the charging handle with positive force to #### the hammer - once it is broken in it became more tolerant.
 
The manual that came with it fully explains this, read it, then repost your thoughts

My first experience with my Tavor was similar. Functioned normally with a solid "pull back and let slam shut". A bit less force and it occasionally wouldn't fully cycle without a forward assist of the charging handle. I questioned it too but noticed the action smoothed out in time.

Just put some rounds through it, and have fun! They're great rifles :)

I have glanced through the manual, I did not come across any instruction to require the user to pull forcibly back the handle, only about letting it slam forward forcibly. Feel free to point me to page that talks about that.

Thank you again for commenting, any comment is welcome. However I would suggest you take a read through the very short thread and Greentips's input to understand what we are talking about here. Others in this thread have already re-read carefully the wording of the question, I think it is not too onerous a task.
 
Page 25 section e , explains the procedure , it states.........."pulling the cocking handle FULLY rearward and releasing if the bolt is closed"

Fully rearward is the key, not forcefully rearward, fully rearward
