Tavor FAQ (updated 08 December, 2008)

Got a used Gen 2 Tavor. Took kids out today and shot 400 rounds.
I took the spring off to help the trigger and it did.
Seemed to have a lot of recoil. I had put a Vortex flash hider on but changed that to a battle comp.
Not sure what optics we are putting on.

I finally got out with my Tavor over the weekend, what a blast! I was curious however, I am brand new to shooting, this was my first time out so I have cleaned the rifle twice now, first when I recieved it before shooting, and then afterwards when I got home. I am wondering if I am doing something wrong, I went through 25 patches before they started coming clean, and even then its not spotless. Is this normal or is my Tavor an especially dirty girl? I was using the Norinco ammo which is quite dirty to begin with.

First I run a dry patch through the barrel from the action end
spray multi use in the barrel and let sit a moment (supposedly cleans and lubricates, but am wondering if I could have made a better choice)
Run some more patches through the barrel until they start coming clean.

then I proceed to do the rest of the cleaning, but the barrel cleaning takes a good 20-30 minutes alone.

Last question where I can I find information on how to mount a scope properly on the Tavor, where to set it on the rail, height/risers etc.. is it simply personal preferance or is there some guidelines to follow?

Well,

I always loved this rifle but never had the impulse/initiative to buy one until I saw here that Can Tire in stratford had one or two rifles in stock. Two days later I got one email from Canadian tire stating that if I used the can tire credit card on Jul 27th, I had 15% rebate on the total purchase and 12 months with no payments and interest free.

So I called the can tire in stratford and drove all the way there, took it and also bought a new leupold glass for my tikka t3 with the 15% rebate.

Now starting to plan the payment scheme...

Initial cleaning was to remove the shipping grease. Now I have not used Norinco ammo but I notice the Tavor chamber entrance is quite dirty. It is possible that you are picking up some of the soot from the chamber entrance. Also, the flash hider can get dirty too.
I clean the barrel using Wipe Out but I do not clean till my patch is spotless. Lubrication - I used Froglube. This is just what I used. I do not clean the Tavor after every range visit. I probably clean the barrel after 500-1000 rounds. However, I lube every 2nd range visit.
Scope mount is personal preference plus eye relief on your scope. I prefer to mount my scope a bit forward so I do not have to strain my neck too much.
I hope this helps.

Hey guys. TVPP and I were doing the left hand conversion last night and we ran into a snag when trying to disassemble the cocking handle. The pin just wouldn't budge. At all. Has anyone else run into this, and if so, what did you do to get the damn thing out? Everything else went smoothly.

For Samson23, removing the pin on the cocking handle, I used a real roll pin punch and some WD40 to get it out. But I have an older model, maybe it is not just a regular push pin anymore?

Once more:

There are four variants of Tavors that have been available in Canada.

Gen 1 was imported by Canada Ammo, and came with a Mepro 21 optic clamped to the barrel. These units contained a military bolt and free floating firing pin, which were later replaced by IWI under concerns over slam fires when used with light primer ammunition. Some 15″ IDF CTAR barrels also came in during this time period. Looks like this:

The Gen 1.5 was a $300 upgrade available for the last two Can-Am batches of Tavors. Gen 1.5 is identical in every way, except that it included a factory picatinny rail and its Mepro 21 used a quick detach mount. Many Canadians with Gen 1 Tavors have converted them to Gen 1.5 using 3rd party rails to allow for more optics than just the Meprolight. Looks like this:

North Sylva took over the IWI contract, and began importing Generation 2 Tavors that feature a full flattop rail. Most of these have integral BUIS and often come with some unusual iron sights off the shelf. These units use a lighter polymer body and have a different texture than the Gen 1 and 1.5 models.

IWI US Tavors have been imported to Canada by IrunGuns, although they are currently rare. These units come with 16″ or 18″ barrels. They are restricted, feature a lighter trigger, and have QD sling mounts in the hand guard and rear receiver. They are a flattop with integral BUIS, and have a body that is very similar to the Gen 2. Looks like this:

All Canadian Tavors are under the TAR-21 model name. The IWI US Tavors are called SAR-21s, on account of their unique trigger pack and receiver insert. The IWI US Tavors seem to be compatible in terms of barrels with Canadian Tavors, but BCG and trigger packs are certainly not. In depth compatibility between the TAR21 and SAR21 platforms has yet to be tested.

Its worth noting that within the past 6 months we have seen the first FDE TAR21 models and a return of the CTAR variants with restricted barrels straight from Israel.

Glad I could make you laugh (??) thanks for the answer though!

I see a "latest gen" for sale in the EE now but without those add-on flip-up sights... while dealers seem to sell them with BOTH the integrated flipups and the rail mounted ones. Who is installing these things?

FDE model with a Battlecome 1.5, Magpul RSA sling mount (perfect for a single point) and a streamlight TLR-1 with the remote pressure pad mounted below the actual pressure button on the hand guard.

I am having a huge fight in my mind weather or not to buy this rifle... I keep looking at my credit card... looking at the site sponser....

I've always wanted this rifle but never paid so much money for one before...

Surely i'm not the only one to be in this situation !!!!! Thoughts?
