Tavor FAQ (updated 08 December, 2008)

Anyone know if it's possible to swap the 13" barrel into an 18.5" 5.56 X95? I know you can swap the 16.5 but can't seem to find anything about changing it to 13".

Yes, you can. You’ll need the shorter (SBR) handguard and top rail.
You’ll likely also need to swap over the “hammer head” from one barrel to the other.. which can be a bit tricky…

Garand Thumb Ice Test Part 2.

Anyone seen it? Tavor completely failed. Safety was stuck, trigger wouldn't move and mag release was frozen solid. Apparently rifles made in desert nations aren't so good for arctic use.

The test is absurd, which is why almost every rifle failed.

Yes, to an extent, as is the InRange mud test.

These kinds of extreme "tests" do demonstrate certain weaknesses in some rifle designs. I'm not even a fan of the AK but it is somewhat undeniable that the AK safety is much more tolerant of muck etc. It also shows that controls with long actuation levers / rods are highly susceptible to becoming jammed.

The one that surprised me was the AR spanking the AK in the mud test. The AR dust cover is highly effective at keeping crap out of the action. The open nature of the AK allows crap into the moving parts of the action.

It was the total failure of the Keltec RDB in the mud test that prompted me to get a Tavor. Once jammed up the RDB is extremely difficult to clear without pulling the whole thing apart, which is not exactly field friendly work. As a military designed rifle, the Tavor is easier to field strip.

In the end, I think the most important lesson for black rifle owners is the importance of keeping a rifle clean and dry in cold conditions. Something most people don't understand. Even taking a rifle inside a warm tent could result in it jamming up solid when it is returned to the cold. Dropping a rifle into water in subzero temps would be essentially fatal to the operation of any rifle.

The Sabra trigger bow is a decent upgrade for less money, though still expensive for what you get. I’ve never been willing to spend the money for the trigger pack.

The bow is 100% worth the cost and makes the biggest difference. I would say the pack isn't worth the money unless you want it to be the best that it can be and you don't care about the added cost.

I would agree with this.

The X95 trigger pack is a big step up from the previous versions.

Today I tried a Gen 3 PMAG in my X95 and it worked just fine. Seems only the Gen 2 PMAGs cause problems. I bought 4 metal GI mags to run in the X95.

Just to confirm, I ran my reloads over the chronograph and they come out of the X95 at 2850 fps, which is a little light for a 55gr bullet but not way too light. The ammo was built to be blasting ammo and it has reliably cycled AR's, a WK180 and an RDB. The X95 is the only rifle that has had issues ... although that seems to be only w Gen 2 PMAGs.

Anyone got a recommendation on a good hardcase for the X95? I was looking at the Case Club precut one, but it's a bit pricy - not sure if it is worth it. I'm looking for something that will protect it from dust, rust, etc.

So the biggest gripe not being able to suppress it, and because he is most familiar with an AR not a huge fan of bullpups. For folks who have them here in Canada, moot point.

As a few have pointed out, suppressing your Tavor doesn't void the IWI warranty and so many people have been doing it for so long without serious issue that that "rifle was destroyed after 4000 rounds" seems a bit questionable. There's probably more to that story.
I think it's common knowledge though that it's not a great suppressor host.

I loved how he gushed about how good the trigger was, after mentioning he had installed a $600 aftermarket trigger.

If anything, my X95 seems under gassed.
