So me and my buddy decided to buy a crate of 1600 rounds of surplus 5.56 and take my Tavor out for the day and see what we could do to the rifle. Needless to say, we shot 1600 rounds in a single day with ZERO malfunctions of any sort, apart from two that were user error. One being jamming 6 rounds into a 5 round mag by accident causing it to FTF, and two having the ejection port covered by a shooting bag when benching. I cannot believe how impressed I was with the rifle, we had this thing so hot, it melted the case that it was beside, it was an inch or so away, it wasn't even touching it. Even with the barrel piping hot, it was not uncomfortable to shoot, just very warm. The only gripe I have with the rifle is how dirty the long-stroke piston design gets. You seem to get a lot of blowback residue inside the receiver. I have some video footage but I'll have to wait until I have time to upload it to youtube. Anyone else every shot the heck out of these and how did they fair? Very impressed.

It's a pretty decent rifle, I agree. The gasses in the eyes is one MAJOR problem of the Tavor I have. Very unconformable.
Other then that, it's done, and took everything I have wanted it to.

That's an impressive amount of ammo to shoot in one day!

You know, this reminds me of a Piston vs Di discussion I got into with a guy the other day, trying to defend his VZ against my AR, and he could not grasp the concept that one is no cleaner then the other, they just get dirty in different places. Time saved cleaning the bolt is spend on the piston in some designs.

I was referring to the internals of the receiver. It is noticeably quicker to foul than my ACR. The ACR vents all unused gas forward underneath the gas block and keeps blowback residue to a minimum. Please don't confuse what I was trying to say.

strip it down and clean it really well, especially the gas ports, you were shooting corrosive ammo and you don't want any corrosion blocking off the gas system, as it wont cycle right in time. WEre it mine I would be stripping it right down, using a barrel wrench to pull the barrel from the stock so I could really clean it properly.

This wasn't chinese ammunition, it looked eastern European, it comes 40 rounds wrapped in brown paper. I've shot this stuff for a while now and haven't had any problems with corrosion. Not to mention the store owner told me is was non-corrosive when I bought it. Who even makes corrosive 556 so I can look out for it down the road? As far as I knew there was no such thing.

I really hope it wasn't the Norc ammo you were using. Running the rifle that hard with undersized ammo probably did your barrel no favors.

So if it wasn't Norinco, what kind of ammo was it? Do you have pictures of the boxes it came in? The Norinco has been sold in the 1600 round cases and so that why it looks like this is what you were shooting.

Ahah, I bet you it is, I just did a quick google-fu and turns out I was wrong. Looks like it is Norinco, still advertised as non-corrosive though. Sorry for being such a dunce! Doh! In any case, this ammunition is great and I've had no problems with it.

Did it help that the Ammo was in yellow boxes with the words NORINCO written all over them :p:p:p Don't they also say "Peoples republic on China" on the side of the box? Or is it the white box stuff?

It is NON Corrosive, however the Norinco ammo has consistently shown inconsistent bullet diameter. Some people on here have explained all of the nasty things this can do to you barrel, but it's a lot of breath and I have to go to work, maybe someone else can explain what the under sized projectiles could have done to his barrel.

It's not packaged in 20 rounds yellow boxes though! It comes in two spam cans with 40 rounds in brown paper with no chinese markings that I could make out. I always thought this stuff came in the yellow boxes but I'll be damned.

Interesting. What does the head stamp look like?

I actually think with what I've seen from the Norinco, that it should be taken off the shelves. It's user beware with the cheap chinese stuff, and when the retailer thinks there is even the slightest chance the ammo could be damaging people's guns, they probably shouldn't be selling it anymore.

You need to get yourself some AR500 plates! Stop putting holes in things!
