I finally got my hands on a Tavor yesterday morning ( after the gunshop forgot to call even though I had a deposit down). So after showing it off to my brothers and some co workers, I took it home to give it a clean and good once over.
My first problem was pulling a patch that, turned out to be too big and got stuck, into the bore. I was using an Otis cable( never again) and couldnt pull it through or pull it out the back. I ended up pulling the whole gun apart (Thank you TV`presspass for the disassembly videos) but not before trying to unlock the barrel before the guide rod was completely removed( I skipped that part of the video). Luckily, almost no damage but a little scar to the guide rod.
Speaking of unlocking the barrel, I probably built 4 or 5 home made barrel wrench tools out of a 1/2" bolt. If you decide to do this, I would suggest using a grinder to do it. Don't use a hack saw and file. My hack saw and hand filed bolts fit well but would just twist it apart. Also, do NOT forget to press the pin on the oppsite side of the gun as the barrel lock, to unlock the barrel locking mechanism before applying torque to it. I hope that sentance made sense.
After ripping little pieces of the patch out from the chamber, I was able to pull the patch all the way through the bore. After a quick but thorough inspection I finished cleaning the gun, put it back together and function tested. Everything was okey dokey.
Today I was able to stop on the way home from work and sqeeze off a few rounds. I've heard complaints of a heavy trigger but I honestly liked mine a lot. Smooth and firm. Not heavy. Not perfect but it worked better than I expected. Accuracy was also impressive. I wasnt punching paper on a benchrest trying to get 1" groups. But I was able to hit coke cans while standing from roughly 80ish yards. More frequently while crouching. Not back for irons that arent sighted in yet.
I did have troubles with the Mag not fully seating when full and the bolt closed. I also had a few fail to fires but I think the charging handle was just not seated far enough forward. If I just pulled it back again and let go she was good to rock and roll.
All in all I like the gun alot.I Cant say its love. We're just not there yet, but there is definately potential. When I got home my new LAR mags and 500 rounds of .223 had been delivered. My Eotech should be ready at the post office in the morning. Then I'll give her a real workout.
