I finally got my hands on a Tavor yesterday morning ( after the gunshop forgot to call even though I had a deposit down). So after showing it off to my brothers and some co workers, I took it home to give it a clean and good once over.

My first problem was pulling a patch that, turned out to be too big and got stuck, into the bore. I was using an Otis cable( never again) and couldnt pull it through or pull it out the back. I ended up pulling the whole gun apart (Thank you TV`presspass for the disassembly videos) but not before trying to unlock the barrel before the guide rod was completely removed( I skipped that part of the video). Luckily, almost no damage but a little scar to the guide rod.

Speaking of unlocking the barrel, I probably built 4 or 5 home made barrel wrench tools out of a 1/2" bolt. If you decide to do this, I would suggest using a grinder to do it. Don't use a hack saw and file. My hack saw and hand filed bolts fit well but would just twist it apart. Also, do NOT forget to press the pin on the oppsite side of the gun as the barrel lock, to unlock the barrel locking mechanism before applying torque to it. I hope that sentance made sense.

After ripping little pieces of the patch out from the chamber, I was able to pull the patch all the way through the bore. After a quick but thorough inspection I finished cleaning the gun, put it back together and function tested. Everything was okey dokey.

Today I was able to stop on the way home from work and sqeeze off a few rounds. I've heard complaints of a heavy trigger but I honestly liked mine a lot. Smooth and firm. Not heavy. Not perfect but it worked better than I expected. Accuracy was also impressive. I wasnt punching paper on a benchrest trying to get 1" groups. But I was able to hit coke cans while standing from roughly 80ish yards. More frequently while crouching. Not back for irons that arent sighted in yet.
I did have troubles with the Mag not fully seating when full and the bolt closed. I also had a few fail to fires but I think the charging handle was just not seated far enough forward. If I just pulled it back again and let go she was good to rock and roll.

All in all I like the gun alot.I Cant say its love. We're just not there yet, but there is definately potential. When I got home my new LAR mags and 500 rounds of .223 had been delivered. My Eotech should be ready at the post office in the morning. Then I'll give her a real workout.

Stay vigilant my friend, I hear they will be every where across canada in the next week or so but wont last long. Check everywhere! Also keep checking EE I've seen 3 lately but they go fast. Good Luck!

Well done sir! I wasn't brave enough to take my Tavor apart until after several months of shooting it and partial disassemblies! Sounds like there were a few hiccups but you got through it just fine.

I cut up rags and table clothes for patches in my other guns. But I usually use pre-made .223 patches when cleaning the Tavor just because I don't want to lodge something in there.

The mag thing will always be there. Full mags on a closed bolt: there just isn't enough space. Unless you find yourself some more loosely pinned magazines. Also a great reason to buy beowulf mags ;)

For your failure to fires, was it the first round after racking the charging handle? And were you riding it a teensy bit? Its something I have to tell first time shooters of the Tavor all the time. They want to guide the handle forward for some reason, and I have to tell them to just let it slam shut on its own.

Glad the trigger works well! I think you'll find its a solid platform for you. Any plans for optics yet?

Good job! Here is my 2 cents after shooting my Tavor competitively for a few years;

1. All 5 round mags are tight on a closed bolt. Easiest fix is to disassemble the mag and shave a little off the rear of the plastic follower so it hits the rivet slightly lower. Only shave a little and test often, you want approx 5.5 rounds but don't take too much off and let 6 rounds in. If you are not competing the simply open the bolt before inserting mag.

2. Trigger, I also have zero issue with mine. It feels like a normal combat rifle trigger, no different from any C7 I've every been issued. I think people are too used to very light, smooth match triggers.

3. Barrel wrench. Grind down an old large Allen key or simply buy one from Dlask.

4. Cleaning, use the kit that came with it. Keep it on hand as the rods are handy in case you get an obstruction from bad ammo.

5. Guide rod, been there done that... Mine has lots of scars lol.

6. Mag changes, use your trigger hand back of thumb to move back and hit the mag release, once you get it you'll be quite fast with changes. Use your mag hand thumb to smack the bolt catch after jamming in the mag.

Enjoy the rifle, she is very accurate and fun to shoot!

Cheers
Tim

Congrats on your new purchase! my tavor has fired about 800 trouble free rounds. i had an eotech on mine but i ditched it for an acog..i really think think rifle was made for a 3-6x optic. Let me know if you want to go out tavor shooting sometime il bring mine along!

Congrats and great review. Me three have ZERO issues with the trigger and overall!

I love the rifle and have to say I baby it too much. I got Eotech EXPS and Aimpoint Pro on their way and also thinking of getting magnifier depends which optic I decided to use.

I picked up my Eotech EXPS 3-2 from the post office this morning, rushed home and mounted it. I took the Tavor out this afternoon to put her through her paces. Not quite 300 rounds shot and it ran great! Got to test out my LAR mags and my tactical vest too.

It took a bit to get the Eotech sighted in because I forgot to zero it first, but once I did it worked awesome. I was able to aquire targets fast and be consistently accurate.I definately would like to try out a magnifier with this optic though. It just seems like I'm not using the rifle to its full potential without magnification. I was able to hit a survey stake from 100 meters though so I can't complain at all.

Man this gun just handles great. So much fun. I'd like to try a new vest also. The one I have is one I impulse bought at an airsoft store like 8 years ago and never used. It worked but mag changes were awkward and the pouches were too high.

Thanks for the tips guys. Very helpful! Has anyone done any bench rest accurracy testing yet?

Just a quick one for if you get a patch stuck of any size or type. Grab your wife, gf...... Mums :/ hair dryer.

Using the hottest setting, run it back and forth down the barrel or even just at the end of it for quite some time. Then add some drops of oil gradually down the barrel and let the "swab" or pull through soak it up as you heat. Heating it will assist expansion for the barrel and the oil will cause the stiffness of the swab to relax slighty to pull it out. I garuantee it will come out.

Just a bit of help :) I've been there. Great news on your Tavor BTW! Glad you like :)

Happy shooting

Ive used that trick before on other things and with a torch but never thought to try it on my barrel. Good idea, thanks!

Ive been debating getting a rig like yours after seeing your vid but wanted to test my vest out first to see if I even liked using one. I just wish your rig came in digicam. I'd like to find a better sling too. The srtings and seatbelt work in a pinch, but I think I could find something that fits a bit better. Between my vest and that sling, it just didnt mesh well. Lots of hang ups, and the seatbelt dug into my neck.

I hope your out having fun shooting today!
Going to take mine out tomorrow for some range time I think!

Also, for vests?

Tavors are nice but can they be configured so that the cases eject from the left? As a southpaw this would be important to me. If only the AUG were available in Canada. Nice rifle Redbearded1. I envy you. Have fun with it in the more free province in Canada. You cowboys should lead the way with rights and that will trickle down to the more cowed Canadians in the more subservient provinces of Canada. Good luck with the rifle and be sure to post your experiences with the Jewish rifle. Those boys really use that rifle for real.
