Tavor Vs Type-97

I've wanted a Tavor for a couple years now. It seems like in the last year and a bit, this year, and next year there will be plenty of new bull pups for people to spend their money on. My plan is to save money and wait patiently for either a sale or a steal on the EE for a Tavor as someone looks to fund their newer bull pup purchase. Now I just need to wait until after Christmas so I can rebuild my funds.

What bullpup rifle is coming to Canada soon? None that I'm aware of. You might end up waiting a long time for discount Tavors.

hahaha, nice!

I have a T97, my brother has a Tavor. I'm familiar with both via shooting, cleaning and stripping.
The T97 is so simple. It's literally 27 pieces, and can be broken down and field stripped while at the range if need be. Which is a good thing, because my T97 has had some growing pains along the way. After a few hundred rounds it shoots awesome now, and more importantly it's a lot of fun to shoot. I have an FTU and Bushnell AR223 optic on it and regularly hit within 1.5" at 100 yards. I trust it to take down a coyote if need be, and I can throw it in the back of my Rzr without worrying about it getting dirty. It may have 2-3 FTF per 100 rds, but at the end of the day it's a toy, not a battle rifle. If I FTF at the range, it's not a big deal. I fill a bunch of ACR mags and shoot until the barrel is red hot :d

The Tavor is a piece of engineering. It's intricate, well built, and well designed. It's worth the additional cash if you have it. At the time I bought my T97, I also snagged a couple other guns. If I knew then what I know now I would have grabbed an FDE Tavor and called it a day.

So the question is, do I dislike my T97?
Not at all. For around $1550 I got a cool looking gun, rail and optic that shoots well, fits my body and shooting style, and is strong enough to get bumped around in the back country. Something I may not do with a Tavor.

Either way you go, you won't be upset.

I take mine on hikes all the time. I dont care if it gets banged around. It is designed to take the abuse. I have humped it for km on end while hiking and it still fires and cycles reliably.

You can buy a T97 barely used and install an FTU for $1200... what I did. I like the simplicity of it with regards to field stripping... no tools required just pop out two pins. Every time I pull the trigger it goes bang. The gun feels great and shoots great.. same groupings as a Tavor from what I have seen. SO, a Tavor costs an additional $1500, requires several tools to field strip, has a better mag release and better safety...that's about it... do I want one some day? ... maybe ... :)

Hmm.... tools to feild strip a tavor? Please enlighten us Tavor onwners on what tools we need to feild strip our guns. If you need tools to do it then I have been doing it wrong then. In fact Tavors are pretty much the easiest gun in the world for a feild strip.

With any luck Kel Tec RDB, K&M Arms M17S, and the Desert Tech MDR will see a debut in Canada at some point in the near future.

It won't be near future. All those guns are 3 years out or more. The M17s will show up sooner then the others but it still will be a good long wait. This assuming we keep a Conservative majority government. If we dont get that none of them will get here.

The last I saw you needed a Phillips screwdriver and the barrel lug wrench to remove the barrel from the rifle housing no?

He is talking about the bullet to pop the push pins, jar of hummus to lube it, and pita to wipe it down!

A good lubricating hummus is hard to find. Not enough olive oil in the hummus and the Tavor will bind up. Not enough chic peas in the hummus and it will over heat and burn off leaving nothing there. I like the hummus i get from A&P best. It taste good to boot.

For a thorough cleaning? All i do is the same as a field strip. Pull the bolt carrier, clean and lube it, do the same with the barrel, gas tube, and trigger pack. Done.

Only time I ever pulled the barrel was for leftorizing.

But even to remove the bolt carrier you need an allen key to remove the rails and a punch to remove the pin on the quick detach (pin) assembly so you can rotate it to remove the carrier don't you?

Uh. No.

Remove trigger pack.

Remove bolt carrier group.

Break BCG down to firing pin

I can do it all with a bullet-tip.

If you want to go deeper, then you do need some tinkering tools.

To remove the bolt carrier is one push pin.

To remove the trigger pack is to push pins.

To remove the barrel off a factory new flat top tavor, you must remove the bolt carrier, top rail (2 hex screws), lower foregrip (2 Phillips screws), the upper foregrip/charging handle guide (held by the sling attachment swivel screw), and the fashion your self a barrel wrench.
