Ok - so now that the Tavor is here who's gonna do a Tavor VS Type 97 review? :nest:

Someone that owns both rifles needs to do it with pics and range reports. I know some gun nut out there has to own both...I'm eagerly awaiting someone's unbiased review:D

Well - we'll see. There are already some things I notice about the tavour that make me wonder...the sling attachement points on the Tavor are kinda odd. It seems to field strip a little harder than the Type 97..from the posts I've seen you have to use a punch and the 97 you just use your finger.

The Type 97 controls suck - unless someone could develop a norgon style ambi mag relase..NOTE to all Machinists this would be a good seller if Marstar gets their hands on 97's. The safety is also lame....but mine shoots like a hot damn.

It seems people do not like the supplied red dot and a new rail is needed for the tavor. This is a similar situation for the 97...

Of course there is the price difference...

The tavor is non-restricted...but according to Dekard a non-restricted 97 is on the way...

But like I said - I haven't shot or even seen a Tavor in person...so someone who owns both needs to do a review.

Tavor is the better from handling both, talking to a lucky few that have fired both, the 97 is quite nice to shoot as is the Tavor, the 97 suffers in it's controls. I would be happy with either one.

The type 97 charging handle is aweful. Try that in winter when your fingers are frozen. The fire control switch is all arse backwards and the magazine catch is awkward. It is impossible to have quick action with a loaded chamber and safety on. If you want to have an empty chamber with bolt fully forwards, you better work on your two fingers strength. It cannot be brought to action quickly from a safe condition.

It is nice to shoot and it balances well. I guess for static range use it is not a big deal.

This is a must... It cant be too hard to but in a cross-bolt can it? :runaway:

I'm not sold that this is necessary. The Balance of the 97 is just behind the pistol grip. Operating the safety with the left had is quick and easy. The only good thing about putting it where it is is that you have to make a concious decision to operate the safety. There's almost no chance of accidentally disengaging it. The operating lever works fine, the only thing that REALLY bothers me is the mag release. No matter how much I practice a mag chage, it's awkward.

97 has much better trigger pull, easy to take apart for maintenance, no tools
required. almost half price.
tavor - cool looking, poor optic, very heavy trigger pull.
i love them both.:D
i mjust installed a scope on my travor, will post groups.

Funny - I don't mind the charging handle on mine...I can operate it with my index finger on either hand...it did get easier with more rounds down range though.

Now we're getting somewhere! Just wondering how you rate the fit and finish of both?

Lever drops their drawers!!

Just saw this in the red rifle section...and confirmed on their web site.

leverarms June special type 97 for $1160.00, $1200 for the shorty

For what you get guys, it's a freakin steal. True they are restricted but hey, it's a third of the price of a Tavor...

Buy both! CanAm offers financial plan for Tavor.

X2

regarding the Norinco quality, don't forget there is the old "copycat" and there is the new program where you find the Type95/97.

From what I can see since I also own a Type-97, the overall quality is not bad at all. Actually I was impressed.
Maybe at the end the Tavor would win some points over the Type-97 but as Clobb says, it's half the price and you can get 2 for one Tavor.

Still, I would like to see a test with both rifle!
