Yes, they have said that is the long term plan. And yes they have said they first wanted to get the SPBAR in as part of that long term business plan.

While it is correct that the Armi Jager AP80 is not a variant of the standard AK in the mechanical sense, it is however a direct variant of the Mitchell AK22 which is on the AK47 named prohib list. This is how they went after it as being a prohib. Not that it was similar to the AK47, but that it was a variant of another named "AK47" on the prohib AK47 list.

The Mitchell AK-22 was actually a Armi Jager AP80, but had different name plates. Mitchell didn't manufacture guns, but rather had Armi Jager make and brand the guns for Mitchell.

Nearly everything about this phantom gun is speculation, but it seems that the original plan was to use AK magazines. Then somebody in the decision chain came to the realization that with a manual action there would be no round limit, so they set about designing a mag. specifically for this rifle. AK mag.s are cheap and plentiful, which would be one marketing plus for the first idea, but the sting of the revelation of the bolt action made people say ‘it's stupid and why would I want it limited to 5 anyway?’ (Never mind that if the supply of accessories is more controlled, the price and profits will be higher.)

If it is being held up for approval based on the mag.s, it is surely so that the RCMP can very carefully check that they didn't just slap a new label on an un-pinned AK mag.

Now *IF* there is going to be a semi automatic version down the road, these supposed ‘bolt action’ magazines will have to not come in the box with it, otherwise we're back to a 5-round limit.
 
And the mags they are waitig on are 15 round mags so they arent taking a magazine allready in production( 10,20,30,40 round mags) and slapig the new name on it.

So that would be a no then! I hate rumors and speculation! I'll just wait and see if the rifle makes it into Canada; and if it does that gives us a legal receiver that they may next bring in in semi auto configuration. It won't be a prohib receiver like the AK-47 receiver is.

If by a miracle they do manage to get in 15 round "bolt action AK mags" I will buy some for my SKS D
 
I always wondered about the receiver that the US allows to be imported by manufacturers that comes in as taking a single stack mag configuration. They import it and it's allowed because it's not a double stack config AK receiver! They take it and modify it to take AK parts and mags and sell it as a AK type firearm; although they don't call it a AK-xx they call it something totaly different but it does look just like a AK though.

A review of the gun was in a recent magazine that focused on AK's I'll try to look it up and give the issue. I just thought it was very interesting that the receiver was not compatible with AK mags until it was remanufactured to do so! though there might be possibilities there in it's original config.
 
AK-47 & Soviet Weapons #128 from earlier this year. It's called the Century GP WASR-10. The receiver is made by Cugir in Romania.

They are imported(US) as single column semi automatic rifles. They lack the dimples on either side of the receiver above the mag well and have only a 2 position safety. Doubt that's enough to not consider them AK's as they are loosely based off Romanian AKM type guns.
Be interesting to submit one to RCMP though.

Don't get it twisted. What you said was that it would never be classified non-restricted. You haven't been proven right just yet. Just sayin'.

I said it would either not be non restricted or so far modified that it wouldn't work. Welcome to your favourite rifle. How are you liking it? Hahahahaha

Im not arguing. I am thoroughly amused that this thing turned out to be the complete failure i expected it to be. Who cares what the classification this is? Who in their right mind would say. Mmmm cz858 no, csa vz58 no, mini 14, no, su16, no. Overrated straight pull bolt action for 1grand? Oh Yeah. Mind you I was partially cheesed that this wasnt a little less crap. At least if it was semi auto i could have scored a couple cz858s for cheap.
 
Why is this even worth thinking about anymore? It's the aborted fetus that would've been the love child of Backfire and Flop.
