Tell me about 7mm-08

Like others have posted.

W760 has worked really well for me with 150gr with a magnum primer. Varget with 140gr and less. Both powders had a couple of accuracy nodes and the lower charges were light on the shoulder and pretty accurate for what we require.

I do have a 100gr load in W760 and Varget as well for pop can trigger time but there are better choices for hunting bullets that's for sure. (That's what I am going to get my daughter started with before creating something heavier and more harvest appropriate.)

I wouldn't hesitate look at the Nosler 120 BT. My son uses 140gr version and they work. Some here have expressed that the jacket on the 120's are thicker than the 140gr offering so it may be something to look at.

What's the PB&J? What's and economical bullet to start with? Somthing that will knock down deer, a well placed elk or moose if presented?

PB&J in my opinion is h414/w760 and a 140gr partition or accubond.

For economical and low recoil to start them on would be the 120gr ballistic tip, which at 7/08 velocities will also work perfectly on deer sized game.

I haven't had time to try it yet but Winchester powders say Staball 6.5 powder and 120 gr = 3200 fps in the 7-08....:)

Haven't had much luck finding 120gr 7mm bullets. I'll start with a minimum load of varget. I'm waiting for canada post right now. Then I'll get some dies brass and bullets

120-140 grain bullet and 30 grains of H322, doesn't get any more reduced then that. run any bullet weight over that powder charge

Hornady make an acceptable 120gr cup and core bullet. Like you I was very new to 7mm-08 a few years ago and a fine experienced chap told be all about the wonderful benefits if using Win. 748 powder, which was truly fortunate for me a I had lots of 748 powder on hand. i experimented with 120gr Hornady, as well as 139gr. And also some fun loading and shooting of barnes TTSX bullets in 140 and the 110gr offerings.
My rifle is in a Tikka and it was rather uncomfortable to shoot so I had a custom screw on brake installed. I was fire forming brass with 120gr hornady bullets and 43gr of powder and getiing wonderful groups at 100 yards.
I worked up 139gr loads to 45 gr of Win 748 to exceptional groupings. 140gr barnes also loved 45gr of powder. The barnes manual does show loads for the 110gr bullet with 748 powder and the best shooting load in my rifle is right at 48gr. Win 748 powder is seldom in short supply and you will be pleasantly surprised with its performance ib the 7-08 chambered rifles.....FS

I have a rem 700 7-08 built up as a PRS/Long Range rig my load is 40.5 Gr Varget with Lapua Brass, CCI primers, and 162 gr ELD-X. That load is about 0.015" off the lands and gives me 2745fps and sub 1/2 minute. I haven't had the opportunity to hunt with it yet but it really impresses me at distances out to 1200m. I can imagine this load would be great on deer size critters out to 500 or more with a well placed shot, and bigger animals inside of 400. Cheers

Actually it's a great choice for people that are recoil averse.

I have cleanly taken Moose, Elk, Bears, Deer with a 7-08 and none of them noticed that it wasn't a magnum.

Of course, i didn't say differently. Bonus that it's an excellent candidate for reloaders to build lower recoil loads for new shooters and that was the thread topic.

For my 11yr old daughter, I used 110 gr Barnes on the lower side of the chart with Varget, almost no recoil and that gun is so much fun to shoot, it has taken a couple of black bears nicely with no issues. My eventual plan is to get her to 130 or 140 gr bullets with more oomph behind them.

Cool post and info mate, im so amazed that someone on the interneet has ever loaded a barnes at anything other than 3gr over max!
an it worked!

:)

Congrats man and im stoked you have your daughter into it.

I once was a fan of 7mm-08, if not due to its low popularity, I would have got one.
my local Cabelas, sometimes, only have 1 kind ammo in shelf, goodtimes, 3 kinds. while there are always plenty of 308, and even 6.5 cm is much more than 7mm-08.
not saying it is not a good one, but , just dying in popularity

I started my kids on 7mm08 loaded with 120 gr Sierra prohunter and starting load of IMR4064. 2500 fps and light
recoil.
