Tell me about 7mm-08

leverevelution powder is a sleeper powder, they never published data for lots of cartridges outside of the 30-30 and 35 rem because they didn't find a significant increase in speed, however 2950 with a 140 grain bullet is possible with ease, I won't publish our data but it is something I have been playing with for a couple of years. the burn rate of LR is the same as CFE 223 but produces higher velocity with lower pressure

I have a pound of this powder, please pm me as well Dave, thanks

I have never shot anything with the 7-08, despite owning a couple of rifles so chambered.
However, I have shot a lot of game with it's ballistic twin, the 7x57, and it was the chambering
that I broke all my kids into hunting with.
A 140 grain bullet at close to 3000 fps is very persuasive on game
A 160 Partition at 2750 will dump the biggest Moose or Elk with authority.
And as mentioned, loaded down with a good 120/125 grain bullet, it is mild mannered, but still
very effective. I use Norma MRP for heavy bullets, H414/RL17 for the lighter ones. Dave.

I have had good luck with Barnes Vor-tx 120 grain ttsx ammo in my rifle, it will cloverleaf with 'em. I also used the 120 gr Nosler Ballistic tip in their factory ammo. 3005 fps in a 24" barrel and a little less in my 20" Winchester 70 Compact. If you research these rounds, you'll come to find them to be the bees knees on the other forums. They are taking elk in Montana and Alberta with the 120 TTSX! Go heavy if you want, but any grain in 7mm-08 will get it done. Truth be told, its more than just a kids/lady cartridge. Writer Ron Spomer has nothing but praise for it as well. If you need the added insurance of a bigger caliber, that's your choice. You may find the 7mm-08 stays in the family for a while. I have other rifles, but certainly wouldn't feel the least bit handicapped if I only had the 7mm-08.

For kids starting out a patty cake load of 4895/4064/Varget, and a Speer 130 grainer!

When they grow into it, just up the powder charge and move to a 139 grain Hornady Interlock.

140 grain Nosler BT and Winchester Staball 6.5 powder, 48.2 grains gets me 2820 FPS out of my Tikka T3x compact w/20" barrel that I put in a full size Bell and Carlson stock. Shoots 0.6 inch 5 shot group at 100 and 1.4 inch 5 shot group at 200. I use this same powder in 375HH gets 3 holes touching at 100. ( load data under max taken from hodgdon website)

Ahhh yes the 7-08, I've just finished building a second one.

I decided on one load for all game Varget with 150gr partition, sighted for 200mtrs.

This has worked well on WT out to 200mtrs so far, great caliber.

Try a Sierra Prohunter. 140 or 120gr. Varget or 4350 would be what I'd try first out of your choices

I use H4350 and 140 Pro Hunter's at near full load. they do not kick like my 06 (both 700's) and on paper the Sierra's perform just like a Partition should you want to go that route for hunting. Either will do a moose under 300 yards. You can shoot that gun all day.
Annealed .308 cases work fine but some neck turning may be required depending on how fussy you are.

Thanks for sharing that.

I picked up a lb of Staball to try for our 7-08 ' s. I have it loaded against different primers at entry level loads to see if this powder has a preference of some type, and we'll ladder test and OCW from there with 140gr bullets.

After paper tests I will chrony it to see where it's at. Spoke to a employee a week ago at one of the LGS and he mentioned that it pressures rapidly according to feedback he is getting.

It metered really well as expected and I am hoping it produces results like W760. That ball powder produced better than book velocities and paper results even for my skills and setup and exceeded expectations with 150gr bullets. ES and SD weren't as tight as results with Varget and 140gr bullets, but it was approaching that...and accuracy was shockingly good.

Fwiw

I have owned a FEW 7-08 Remmys - Great Cartridge and should be WAY more Popular then it is ! Prob the BEST ? arguably short action NON magnum HUNTING cartridge there is - It and the 308 Win ! are both Great . I have always used a 120 gr TTSX on top H414 or W760 powder for 3000-3100 fps - it has Killed Well with Minor recoil - I Like it ! jmo RJ

My Current 7-08 is a Tikka T3X SS Super Lite with a Leupold 4.5-14 in Talleys .

Indeed! Personally, I have had very encouraging results loadind heavy bullets in a M98 chambered in 9.3x57 using LVR powder. I decided to try it after modelizing it on GRT. Hodgdon lists it as being slower burning than CFE 223, and slightly faster than H380. It is very dense, allowing you to stuff quite a bit within a small case. The slower burn rate results in manageable pressures. No experience with 7mm-08, but LVR does indeed have some untapped potential.

Longest shot I ever made on a WT doe, paced to 425, was with a 7mm-08 using Hornady 139 gr bullets. One shot kill. Worked fine. - dan

aint no complaints there!

I just took my 7-08 to test a POI with the orignal 140gr Woodleigh load ive used fairly exclusively for too long (it just works)
with the 162 SST load running in it at the moment an as far as im concerned, its Zero'd with them, however suprisingly awesomely, the 140gr Woodleighs landed Sweet as about an inch or so above the Bull.... That really excites me.

i feel 'better' with the 140gr PPSN up the chamber!

120 to start and work up to 140 to 150 unless using 120 barnes as it seems good for anything. varget works well as does reloader 17.my all time favorite is reloader 19. use it in the 280 as well.

I have found the 7-08 does fine with a cup and core Hornady 139 gr bullet...even up moose at 400+ yards.
