I'm a big fan of the Fifth Estate and the CBC in general. To be honest, I never felt I would become a firearm "enthusiast", rooting in the corner of lobbyists, supporting to keep restricted firearms legal in Canada. I took my firearm certifications not because I was interested in shooting but as a way to develop professionally. Frankly, I was afraid of firearms but was always interested in a career with the Police. So, this past spring I began the long process of having ZERO firearm experience to getting my Restricted PAL, joining a club and purchasing a pistol!

To my surprise, I now fully enjoy the sport of shooting, so does my fiance, her father and I have become close sharing the joy of firearms, between the research into purchasing a firearm, preparing for competition shoots and the excitement of going to the range. Watching this episode of the Fifth Estate made me proud to be a Canadian who passed all the difficulties of acquiring a license and I wish the United States would adopt the same system.

Where's the puke smiley when you need it?

I think you will find that most of us here do not share your "pride" in the gestapo-esque system of gun control that has been forced upon us by people with little practical knowledge of firearms but no shortage of stupefying, irrational fear of inanimate objects (in other words, people who think the same way you used to). When the next liberal prime minister makes good on Paul Martin's promise to ban handguns, and uses the firearms registry to track down and confiscate the pistol that you enjoy shooting so much, maybe you will understand where we are coming from. And if things should go sour between you and your fiancé and, God forbid, she calls the police and says that she fears for her safety because her ex owns guns, you'd be in for a truly eye-opening experience about this great system of ours.

X2... well put!

Wow, you're new here, huh. I bet you'd have been really proud of our system when they were confiscating Feather AT's a few years ago - legally purchased, made illegal overnight with no compensation. I'm also willing to bet you'll be thrilled if you're ever the victim of a warrantless search because you're a firearm owner. There was a guy in Ontario a couple of years ago who was cavity searched in his driveway, in front of his wife and kids, by the ERT - yep we've got lots to be proud of. Incidently, you had "difficulties" getting a PAL, I thought it was pretty futile. :onCrack:

CBC fan, glad to see you became a firearms enthusiast.
Welcome to our world.
I don't think the US will adopt Alan Rock's ideas, though.
In time, you will develop new insights on that.

X2, I hope he learns from this board, and not by firsthand experience.
Now, if we could only get him to promise to vote Conservative....

Well, that is the complete opposite side of the coin and of course, something I know absolutely nothing about. To be honest I didn't even know what ian_in_vic was talking about with Feather AT's, I had to google it, I still don't know, the search didn't turn anything up. I'm not a single issue voter but come the next federal election (possibly this fall I hear), unfortunately, I will be. Now, I most certainly do not spread or believe other people are trying to spread fear of firearms, everyone knows that it's the user so, we have strict laws as to who can acquire a firearm and what kind they can get but this is being bypassed by people bringing firearms in from the U.S. Lastly, on this subject for people to compare firearms to knives or other weapons is ridiculous, a firearm has the presence of an entire gang, a firearm can immediately and instantly kill with little effort. Finally, lets face it people fear firearms because they ARE scary not because the media says they're scary.

I still strongly and firmly believe that handguns need to be less easy to acquire in the U.S. Canada has a gang problem, I don't want to be shot someone with an illegal pistol (not that I want to be shot witha legal one either) but, I firmly believe that the vast majority of people seeking firearms that should not be carrying them would be weeded out in the testing or background portions of their licensing.

You've taken a giant step forward in your thinking, now it's time to take a second. Freedom can be a scary thing, but not so scary as the alternative.

Hoser, thanks for the kind words! I do promise to vote conservative, where do I pre-register??? :)

I know the U.S. will probably never get close to Canada's ideals (and I say ideals because obviously they don't 100% work) on firearm control but, I do hope at least something can be done about the illegal transfer of firearms into this country.

Right, and that will stop the criminals from obtaining firearms.

It may be semantics but 'carrying' a firearm, especially handguns, is already illegal in Canaduh.....

Well thank you, as far as the alternative to freedom, that is truly a scary thing but I have to ask does anyone really feel we are at risk of going this direction or that we're already heading down that path? I feel my freedoms are well intact, I know many people feel especially with these firearm restrictions that they're freedoms are not intact but I've always looked at "Gun Control" in Canada (and by the way I don't use the word "Gun" often because it carries to many negative feelings amongst firearm enthusiasts and not) as something that was introduced like car licenses, it's not your right here to bear arms but you are allowed to enjoy shooting and thats what I want, I don't want a conceal and carry permit, I just want the ability to shoot with my friends, go down to the range for fun, have competitions, and just enjoy shooting as a sport!
