A friend of mine has a light blond full wood Swedish Mauser (6.5 by 55), that he is wanting to sell to me for $200.00. As he doesn't use it, and he has come down with a sever case of Mag'itus. :D

I have never owned one of these Mausers, but in searching old posts I have read these can be awesome rifles.

Everything looks clean and rust free, and the little dial has a stamp mark between the 2 and 3...I haven't peeked down the bore yet. A few scratrches near the Magazine floor plate.

How hard is it to get ammo for these rifles?
BTW I don't mind reloading.

Is $200.00 a good price? :confused:

Now I have to somehow break it to wifey. :redface: :D

M96 long rifle, M38 Carbine, M38-96?

Regardless, $200 is a very good price for a Swede in the condition you describe. Check that bore though!!!! :D

We were knocking down 12" steel plates from 400, 500 and 600 meters up at Milcun last summer, using a 1908 Swedish M/41B (M96) Sniper Rifle c/w Ajack 4x90 1942b Scope (Mfg by Carl Gustafs Stads Gevarsfaktori)

Ammo was 6.5x55mm M/41 139gr "Prickskytte" Swedish milsurp.

The problem with these things is you just can't buy and own one of them.... :D

You are probably the only guy here whose wife would agree to let you have "A Little Blonde Swede" without asking what the heck you were up to!:D
 
Go ahead and buy it. Win, Rem, and Fed all make hunting ammo for it, Norma also makes target grade ammo for it, and there are the off-shore brands as well like Igman, etc.

You will love it.
 
A swede for $200? Sounds like bad deal. Let me take the hit for you. you'll sleep better at night. :D :p :D :p

Beware! Like BadgerDog says, you can't own just one.
I have 3 (M96, M96/38 & M38 :D ) They are sweet shooters. Recoil is easy on the shoulder, very accurate and so damn good looking!!!
Ammo is around, but not every store will have it. Might be a little higher in $$ too :( . Reloading supplies are abundant though.

I had a good look at the bore today, and a closer look at her overall.
If all goes to plan she should be in my gunsafe by Friday, and at the range soon after. (once I find ammo) :D

I did notice that the muzzle has some sort of threaded end...what was that for?

It's for a BFA (blank firing attachment).....

I think it makes the rifle less accurate, therefore, you should re-sell it to me for the same price ...... ;) ;) ;)

Hehehe! :D

One thing I forgot to mention is the bolt handle doesn't stick out, it is turned down. (yes pics to follow soon).

I should have brought a tape measure and checked the OAL of the Rifle as I have now read online that some Cavalry models where like this and are slightly shorter then the Army issue.

BTW: The front top of the breech is stamped 1944. :)
 
I think there was a little bit of myth making in the discussion that occasionally crops up about the infantry and "cavalry" models.

My understanding is that there are the Model 96 (full length, 29 -inch barrel) the Model 94 (true carbine) and the M38 short rifle.

If there is another model in between any of these besides the re-arsenaled shortened M96 to M38 length I haven't seen a picture of one yet.

Hey, I'm taking out my "new" Swedish Mauser M1896 (Carl Gustav 1911) tomorrow. I'm using Remington 140 grain SP expanding ammo. Just for the firing range though.

My question is this: I placed a 6.5X55 deactivated round into the chamber and let it fall down by gravity as far as it could but I noticed that the cartridge stuck out by about an inch or half an inch or so from the breech. Is this normal? I had the bolt out and did not try to chamber it. I am not familiar with Mausers. Should it have dropped all the way in or do I just push it in with the bolt? I can't recall for sure but I thought the rounds just dropped into my Mosin Nagant or Lee Enfield breech. They do in my M-1 Garand and M-14S at least.
