Tetanus Rabbits

So thanks to this thread I spent almost 2hrs in the bush yesterday. Was a good work out. Snow is still pretty deep didn't see a single rabbit. Oh well. It was nice a quiet. Spotted Turkey tracks. Some form of predator tracks. I tried to take a pic but the prints in the snow didn't work well with the phone.

Better luck next time friend. A good hunting buddy of mine, Trevj here on CGN, describes the best rabbit producing areas thusly:

When the evergreen cover of spruce trees is so thick, that it blocks out the sunshine and if you trip and fall the entwining branches tend to cushion your fall, you are in the right place for hunting rabbits in NE Alberta.

His very similar words have been the ultimate truth for myself and my hunting buddies since.

Cheers!

Nasty. Get well soon.

Alas, I didn't make it to the bush on the weekend. Too many projects to do at home. Hoping to get out on the long weekend coming... Hoping.

Ironsighter, a little nice twist on the video recipe I posted folks. Tonight my larder was short on carrots and celery. So, I grabbed a few russet potatoes, sliced them a half inch thick, and made a bed for the rabbit meat pieces to cook on.

Mind you, I use a slow cooker instead of into the regular oven. The potatoes do not burn this way, and the lovely cooking marinade flavor, embeds itself into the sliced spuds!!

Freaking yummy folks........:)

Remember to get your tetanus shots once every ten years. If you can't remember, go get one ASAP. It is not something the doctor will remind you to do. I am at the six year mark myself, but I always keep a mental note of it. You owe it to yourself to do this, because once infected, 10 - 20% of people will die.

Thank-you OP for the reminder.

Sounds delicious. I like using either a slow cooker or a pressure cooker for hares. Otherwise they can be pretty tough, in my experience.

^For Far North.

Nope, just two sterile strips. It's so minor a flesh wound.

You must be down in the Similkameen or somethin'. We are a few weeks away from that here in the Thompson.

Life is 99.999% good Trevor.
Good to hear from you. There is still snow on the forest floor, but it is definitely into the melting stage.
Last late fall there was a very large black bear on our friend's property. I didn't see him, but I did see plenty of his sign before he went into hibernation.
Started carrying the 12 along with a few slugs as well as birdshot for smaller game, and purchased a tag just in case I had an opportunity.

I have to actually stop by the health office today to request my childhood immunization shots from where I grew up.
I don't expect a flurry of activity from back east, but whatever........

Any good critter stories from this recent winter Trevor??

take care now....

Well, been leaving a trail of crippled coyotes in my wake... Rolled one over on the pond in front of my place this winter and it thrashed around then finally got up and did a runner. Saw it a week or so later limping along on three legs, but it sure put on some honest speed when the door swung closed on the house behind me....

Shot two dogs on the same spot a couple weeks ago. First one dropped out of sight, at about 250 yards. Went in, finished my coffee and got dressed, got half way out to the spot and saw another standing there. Whacked it. Found it laying on the ground with an extra leg under it. Apparently the first one left on three, and my dogs didn't pick up any of the trail...

A 'yote picked up one of my roosters from here in the yard. I was busy across the farm when the wife phoned, I figure I was at least 20 minutes behind the coyote as I followed the trail of feathers. I jumped two, about half a mile across the farm, and they got away pretty clean, so I went to recover what was left of my rooster. Turned out that they had carted his lucky arse all that way an he wasn't killed yet. He recovered. Been referring to him as "Chew Toy" since.

Chased a 'yote round one of our fields the other day. Ran the rifle dry, missed him, but boy did he run every which way trying to figure out what was going on, and where it was coming from. Oh well.

Lambing soon. Ugh. Sleep deprivation makes me crankier than normal! :)

Cheers
