I start by saying I do not "presently" nor have I ever owned an 1911 of any manufacture. I have done a lot of reading on them and everything I have read has said they're all crap unless you are willing to dump a grand into them. I find this ludicris that the buying public would buy something brand new and have to pay more just so it will work. I also find it impossible to believe that firearm manufactures would tarnish their names with guns that don't perform straight out of the box.

So, that being said and my general lack of belief in all this bad talk about 1911's, please tell me this ain't so. That I can rest assured that if I were to buy a Springfield RO that it will work straight up out of the box without me having to dump more cash into it so it will work.

The gun as designed was to feed ball ammunition. Feeding issues can arise if you want to pump HP or TC through it. If you feed it ball out of the box you should have 100% reliability. Any other bullet shape may cause feeding issues...some HP profiles will work OK, as will some TC and SWC, that's all trial and error though.
 
Not sure but ALL the articles you have read said they are crap? Really? I personally have owned Colt 1991A1, Kimber Custom 2, Norinco 1911A1 , Norinco NP30 and an AMT Longslide Hardballer and never had problems with any of them, used most of them for IPSC years ago. Only extra cash I dumped into them was extra mags and nicer grips. If you want a feel good article on 1911's then read some stuff by Jeff Cooper, the 1911 guru.

OK maybe "crap" was too harsh but in general they are always talking about modifying them so they work reliably.

I'm just concerned that my first grand will have another following it. Something I would rather not do.

I have (2) STI 1911's one in 9mm and the other in 45ACP flawless..

I don't like spending money or modifying a gun if it can shoot reliably
 
Most "newbies" to the 1911 these aren't so interested in "making them work" but "trick'n em out" and "makin' em look AWSOME. Probably to match their AR-15. How many AR-15 posters here are satisfied with the gun "outta" the box ...? Gunsmiths making money working on 1911's are producing "barbie" guns for owners to brag on at the next tailgate bar-b-q ... shoot them ... "naw -wouldn't wanta spoil the looks". My gunsmith buddy showed me a Damascus slide he was working on for a "barbie gun". Wide sweeping statements such as the OP ... I will call a spade a "spade" and say it IS BS!!!!
 
Only firearm I have issue with are my .22's. They want "high velocity" rounds.
My 1911 is an average price range S&W SW1911. I shoot whatever is the cheapest round at the range through it. No issues.
My first firearm was a 1911, as everything I read said they just worked.
Now, if you're a competition shooter, THEN you may be putting money into it. In competitions, gaining .5% in anything is important..
 
Exactly what articles have you been reading? I've been reading gun mags etc for the last 35 years and that is not even a remotely common thread that I have come across.
 
It aint' so....yes you can and might want to spend dough on them to improve function (better trigger pull - better sights) or form (nice grips) but do they need it? Naw. Buy one and you'll see what all the hype is about, they're fantastic!

I have the same as you..both Rangemasters and they are excellent.I would suggest anyone looking for a great 1911 under a grand consider the STI Spartan...
 
My Smith and Wesson 1911 works very Well. I only changed the grips for personal preference but other than that it is out of the box.

With all due respect, I think that your reference material must be a few decades out of date.

Mine have all worked fine out of the box, with one easily fixed exception. The only upgrades I made were ergonomic in nature to suit my preferences.
And I only own 1 gun in the same bracket as your Springfield occupies - the STI Trojan. The rest are budget guns in the $500-$700 range.

Yes. Not sure where you got your info but its definitely 100 years old. I've been into 1911 .45s for 40 years and have never had a problem with any of the Colts or Springfield Armorys or my current Kimber, the best of the bunch. They all shot my SWC reloads and ball ammo flawlessly. They are a bit like the ARs or 1022s with more Lego stuff available than any other firearm. They are available in more different configurations, sizes, finishes and colors that you can shake a stick at. Even the cheap Norinco 1911s($345.) work great but less so than most. Get one, you'll love it especially in .45 auto.
 
Not sure what you are reading that says all 1911's are crap. I have owned many of them over the years and still have three. Every one of them operated very well and were extremely accurate. Even a Norc that I had shot extremely well. A person doesn't need to invest a grand or more to get a good one. My Remmy R1 drills nice tight groups with all types of ammo and less than $600 to boot.

Like you, I'm in the same boat lately. Wanted a beretta but always liked the look and feel and look of the 1911. Have thought about a Dropping a G note on something nice but since it would be my first HG, not sure I want to commit that when there are so many options out there that offer both quality and value for $ spent. I would rather drop a few hundred bucks to find out I'm not a fan after the shine wears off then a grand or more. Especially when a Norc can answer that question for me for $350 or less. I didn't personally go with the Norc but DID decide on the SAM Thunderbolt from a Site sponsor:) for under $600!

Just my $.02 worth! Good luck.
